Chapter 14:
My grandma told me I should go to this group for kids who lost their parents. So that's what I did. I decided to skip school, and around 4, I left. I took Finns car.
When I got there, I pulled up into the parking lot of the church. I had to take the corner parking spot, which I hated. Bad sign.
I walked in through the glass double doors. There was a sign that said 'support group' by a set of carpeted stairs. I walked up. I took a right into a door that was wide open.
It was a big room. Huge actually. There was a big mosaic of Jesus on one of the walls. There were a few book selves with bibles, and in the middle of the room, there were chairs. Like the dark blue plastic ones that you sit in, in elementary school. There was only one chair left, so I sat there.
Next to me, there was a girl. She looked about my age, maybe a year older. She had bold winged eyeliner, long eyelashes and a nose ring. She was absolutely gorgeous.
"Hello everyone, I would like to thank you for being here today. My name is Zach, I am the support group leader." The leader exclaimed. "Here, we will share experiences, our feelings and anything else you feel like you can share. Remember, there will be no judging and whatever is said in this room, stays in this room. Now let's say
a prayer." He continued.
He told us to join hands with the two people next to us. We all did. We then put our heads down as Zach said the prayer. When it was over, he asked who would like to share first. The girl next to me, the one with the eyeliner and nose ring, she raised her hand and stood up. Zach nodded.
"A few months ago, my parents went to New York City for a work thing, and there was a shooting at their work. They didn't survived. I now live with my aunt and uncle who are never at the house. I miss my parents." And she sat down.
The room kinda went silent until Zach said something : "who ever would like to go next, please raise your hand." No one did. So I decided I should.
"When I was 12, my dad went to Afghanistan as a solider. He never came back home. And about three weeks ago, me and my friends, Abby and Sierra drove all the way to medford at 5 am, and when we drove back, my house was in flames. My little brother, Carter, six years old, and my mom, they didn't survive. I now live with my boyfriend, Finn."
I sat back down. I just shared that with a group of about 15 people I didn't know. And that's something hard to do. I felt proud when I sat.
Not all of us shared that day. Infact, only around 5 of us shared. But the group meets every Monday and Thursday, so I'm sure people will share.
As I was leaving, the girl who sat next to me, came up to me and told me how strong I was. We ended up walking together, and I learned a little bit about her. Zara, 16. High school dropout. Works at Dutch bros.
When I got back to my new home (Finns apartment) he was sitting on the couch, watching Ghost Adventures. Finn looks over at me.
"How was it?" He asks me, he offers me some of his popcorn from the bowl and I grab a handful.
"Eh, kinda boring." I tell him, I sit next to him on the love seat.
He nods and we both watch the recorded episode of ghost adventures on his huge tv. But soon enough, we are cuddling. And then making out.
And soon enough, we were both asleep. On the couch.
