It had been a particularly busy day in New York, busier than usual. Pepper Potts wandered the streets in immense thought, she had a lot on her mind otherwise she wouldn't have been so distracted. Distracted enough for someone to target her knowing that she carried some of Tony Starks - a.k.a Iron Man's - incredibly confidential information detailing Avengers business. The feeling of absolute dread swept across her face once she realised what had happened.
Had it not been for the young girl lurking about, Pepper Potts may have been fired.
But alas, the young girl came to Pepper's aid, running down the assailant with a briefcase full of catastrophic information. She was quick and agile for a girl just shy of her fifteenth birthday, bumping through the crowds of New York, never truly losing sight of the man so determined to apprehend the information.
It all happened so quickly, the young girl pounced once she deemed close enough and hooked her left arm around the man's neck. The sudden added weight forced him to collapse into the harsh concrete ground with a grunt. While he was pinned down the girl jerked down the collar of the man's shirt and pressed her hand to his exposed skin, causing him to lose consciousness as a crowd formed around the two.
He finally lost consciousness and she stood up, yanking the briefcase from his grasp. Police sirens echoed in the distance, she had hoped it was for the man and not for her. The people that surrounded her weren't sure what exactly to think, a young girl single-handedly took down a man twice her size. "Excuse me," she politely pushed her way through the sea of people and walked back to Pepper Pott's who had remained quite a distance behind.
The people followed her like she was the queen of the beehive, funnily enough, although it is quite clearly the twenty-first century, not a single person had filmed it. But my did it make for a great story to tell their families when they returned to their quaint homes. When Pepper Potts took the briefcase from the girl's hand she knew, she knew that there was something special about her. "What's your name?" Pepper gently rested a hand on her shoulder, the young girl shuffled her feet, "Isabelle."
Pepper smiled at Isabelle longer than she intended, mainly that was because she knew this young girl was something else. "Well Isabelle, would you like to come with me? I know someone who'd love to meet you." She grinned, walking the young girl back toward the Avenger's Headquarters.
It was a fateful day, one that would lead to many more fateful days.
Today wasn't just the day she saved Pepper Potts from the sack after her heroic save, but today was the day she met Tony Stark. An Avenger. One of the people that had unintentionally caused her parent's death, but if it weren't for that then she'd never would've stumbled across Pepper in crisis as she was running from the group home she was in.
"What's this?" Tony pointed down at the girl in his office, he was positive Pepper was playing a joke on him. Isabelle admired the fine architecture, pristine floors and immaculate walls rather than pay much attention to Tony, who was clearly annoyed there was a teenager in front of him with no explanation whatsoever. "This is Isabelle, she saved m-someone from getting mugged today."
"And?" Tony pressed for Pepper to continue, surely there were lots of kids these days being a humble hero and stopping minuscule crimes. He didn't get what was so special about the girl in front of him, in fact there appeared to be nothing at all remarkable about her. "And - She ran the guy down, he was twice her size and knocked him out like it's nothing - Tony, she's special." Pepper attempted to convince him, but he remained unconvinced.
Isabelle tilted her head up Tony, she had extraordinary coloured eyes that were almost yellow in colour. He sighed and groaned slightly, looking at Pepper in annoyance, "Special? Special how? Steve special? Wanda Special? How is she special?" Of course, she had no clue, she just knew it, given the ease it took to take down a grown man. Once he realised Pepper wouldn't supply him with the answer he wanted he looked down at Isabelle who still looked at him.
"What can you do, kid?" She looked down in response and fumbled with her hands, she was in the presence of an Avenger, of course, she was going to be nervous. "I-I'm not sure what to call it... But I've had it since I can remember." Her voice was soft and delicate, her powers never scared her nor controlled her but it was always the unknown factor that frightened her the most. "Can you show us?" Tony raised a brow, he could hardly get annoyed at her, considering she somewhat reminded him of Harley, the boy he had grown close with just after the Battle of New York.
She shook her head, "it's not -- it's not like that..." She struggled to concentrate, she felt like she was in the principal's office at school getting told off again almost. "Can you give us an example?" Pepper asked, placing a familiar gentle hand on her shoulder. Isabelle was quiet for a moment, trying to think of an analogy to explain her powers. "Uh... Like a..a Leech..." She mumbled, peering up at the two adults coyly.
Gathering from the expression the analogy hadn't quite cleared up the air enough for the two geniuses. She gulped down and continued, "I take peoples...abilities... and...uh-I use them..." Now, this had felt like a scientific breakthrough, a girl, with the abilities to take another's abilities and mark them useless was truly something. How powerful she could be on the Avengers against whatever threat they were up against next. "You know kid, with proper combat training you could be well on your way to becoming an Avenger..." He trailed off, the prospect of a kid joining the Avengers also meant the prospect of having to bury another kid.
Pietrov Maximoff was the very kid the Avengers had to bury, so the idea of enlisting another - much younger - kid to the Avengers was one to be met with caution. Ultron nearly destroyed them all, they were lucky to even get out alive themselves and Tony wasn't about to put another kid out on the line for that. Not until she had the proper training to do so.
Isabelle's eyes widened at his words, "an Avenger?" she squeaked out in disbelief, never since the Avengers first emerged had she thought of joining them. Not with her powers at least. Had she been gifted with something other than power manipulation then maybe she would have dreamt of it. "Yeah, we'll crack you out of that little shell you've got there, train you up and bam! You're an Avenger."
"Okay - that's enough Tony, how about we get you cleaned up and you can think about it all right?" Pepper peered down at Isabelle, she simply nodded. How her day had turned out entirely different than to what she thought.
