David actually has a very low self-esteem and bad Self-Image of himself. He views himself much like Max views the world, someone who's doing things for a lost cause because he'll die eventually. He believes himself to be a loser that nobody can love. He hides this side to himself with his happiness. Small lil gestures of kindness also mean alot to him, which is why he was so happy when Max tried to do the traditional Indian camp bonfire.
