Chapter Three: The Recovery

Pippa's POV:

The car ride to the hospital is almost silent. The cab driver picked up on the mood luckily. After Lin told him our destination he looked understanding and turned the music down.

The whole ride there I lay against Lin's chest, his shirt is soaked from all my tears.

"Lin?" I ask barely above a whisper.

"Yes Pip." He shift his body to see my face.

"H-how could something  like- like this happen?" I have so many thoughts running through my mind. Why did the taxi driver have to run that red light. Why did Steven and Vanessa have to be in that cab.

"Sometimes bad thing happen to good people." Lin replies kissing the top of my head. I know that this is a cliche but it honestly helps a little to hear that.

We finally arrive at the hospital and Lin pays the driver and takes my hand as we walk to the receptionist to find Vanessa's room.

"Hello my wife got in a car accident and they said that she was here." I can tell that Lin is holding back tears. "Her name is Vanessa Miranda."

The woman looked down at the computer and sympathy spreads across her face. "Yes Mr.Miranda I can take you to her now."

I take Lins hand as we follow the receptionist down a few different halls. "Right now she is in the ICU and is currently stable but the doctors want to keep her there to watch her."

As we wall into the room Lins grip on my hand gets tighter. I keep my eyes on the ground. I'm scared to see what Vanessa looks like. It was a bad crash and she was the only survivor.

I hear the steady beat of the heart monitor and the crying that Lin has been holding in. He drops my hand and runs to Vanessa's side.

"I'm here baby, just stay alive. You are strong I know you can make it." Lin could hardly get his words out. Lin's sobs finaly took over his body causing me to look up.

Vanessa is lying there life less, with tubes shoved down her mouth. She had a neck brace on and a cast on her whole right arm and on both legs. The sight of two people close to me in this much pain brought me to more tears.

"Is she suff-suffering?" I asks as the doctor walks in. "No, we put her in a meditated coma. Her brain suffered a lot of damage and we need the swelling to go down before we can asses all of the damage."

"Did Steven suffer?" I blurt out. I tried to hold it back but I couldn't.

"From what we found your fiancé hit his head and died on impact. So no he did not." "How can you be sure?" I need to no that it was as peaceful as it could have been.

"We found that there was no signs of struggle from the car crash, leading us to believe that the hit to his head and neck causing his death."

How am I supposed to tell Steven's parents the news. They were supposed to come to visit next month. They were so happy for Steven and me. I was so happy.

The doctor explains Vanessa's condition to Lin as worry about informing Steven's parents.

After the doctor leaves I walk over to were Lin is knelt by Vanessa. I place my hand on his shoulder "Hey Lin... Can you help me call Stevens parents. I-"

His puffy eyes look up at me. "Of course pip." He answers trying to smile.

I call Stevens's mom and put it on speaker.

"Hey Phillipa, how are you."
"Something happened, I think that your husband should be on the phone with you."
"Hey Phillipa we are both here, are you okay?
"Yes I'm fine-" I hesitate why do I have to do this, break their hearts.
"Phillipa?"

Lin sees that I can't do it and takes the phone.
"Hi, I'm Lin, one of Pippa's friends." He takes a deep breath "My wife and Steven were in a terrible car accident, and Steven- Steven didn't make it."

Immediately Stevens mom screams and starts crying. I hear his dad trying to sooth her, after a few minutes he replies. "Thanks for letting us know yourself Lin and Phillipa. We will probably stop by in the next few weeks to gather Steven's things"

After the call ends I collapse into Lin.

Two weeks later

Yesterday I went with Lin to visit Vanessa. The doctors said that she was getting better. I have been staying at Lin's house to help with with Sebastian while I look for a new apartment. Honestly it was helping me cope. Taking care of someone else helped me keep my mind off of everything that happened.

Lin and I still haven't gone back to work yet, he spends almost all of his time at the hospital while I watch Seb.

Today they are supposed to wake up Vanessa to check her mental state and I offered to join Lin for support.

We enter Vanessa room and she looks a little better that the first time I saw her. The doctor gives her a shot into her IV and says she should wake up in the next 20 minutes but she will be disoriented if her brain didn't suffer from to many injuries.

I sit on my phone and reply to more "sorry for your lose" tweets and emails waiting for Vanessa to open her eyes.

"She's awake!" Lin yells as he runs towards her grabbing her hand. Tries to sit up then suddenly she collapses back on the bed and the heart monitor starts beeping.

Doctors come running in saying they need to do emergency surgery and ask Lin to step back I try to comfort him but he ignores me watching as they take his wife out of the room.

After an hour of waiting the doctor comes back with a sorrow face and without Vanessa.

"I'm afraid she had a brain aneurysm and we couldn't stop the bleeding. She passed away on the table." The doctor says in the low tone.

I turn to Lin to comfort him but he punches the wall. He seems more angry than sad. But then the angry tears turn to sad tears.

Once we leave the hospital we go to Lin's house. Renee took Sebastian for the night so that he wouldn't get scared. Lin and I sit on his couch taking about how messed up our lives are right now while taking shots. Lin is ahead of me by far, I think he just want to forget this night.

I look at Lin and repeat to him what he told me. "Sometimes bad things happen to good people."

He the softly grabs my face and kisses me then I black out.
