4 Months Later (Patrick’s POV)
“You better wake up. We’re going to be late,” I said, yawning as I knocked impatiently on Beverly’s door. “It’s the first day of school for goodness sake.”
Beverly’s door opened, revealing her with bags under her eyes. “Damn it. I’m still tired. Can we skip school today, Pat?”
I laughed at her. “Hell no. I’m pretty excited to be a senior. It’s the first day of our last year in high school. Why can’t you just celebrate?”
“Celebrate? No way. I mean, next year we’re going to be in colleges and that’s a lot hell of a work.”
“Tell me about it,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Just get up and shower, okay? We’re not going to be late for the first day of school.”
She nodded and closed her door. Something tells me she’s going to go to sleep. I sighed and walked downstairs. Mom was already on her work as Rosa told me. Alphonse is having breakfast with me. As I sat down across him, I crossed my fingers so Beverly will hurry up.
I know it’s been a long time since I met Alphonse. But I still feel awkward when I’m with him or something. I can’t really explain it. He was smiling uneasily to me and I grimaced. What did I do now?
I swear I’ve been a good person ever since Kate left. I sighed and groaned internally. Just remembering Kate’s perfect face, her perfect smile, her perfect eyes… Everything about her is just perfect. When Kate left, I’ve been a good person. I even drive Beverly to school every morning and drop her to her friend’s house after school or something. I even take her to a date every Friday night but she knows it’s just as friends.
Joanne, however, became my girlfriend again when Kate left. I broke up with her… again and again, she cried to me and begged me to take her back. But I refused. I don’t love her. I never loved her. There’s only person I have loved and that’s Kate.
Carl and Aeriel went over here during the summer. They stayed for two weeks and it’s just hard to see Kate’s best friend, Aeriel, don’t remember her past being an angel. She doesn’t remember the time when she helped Kate ditch Charisse to go to Prom with me. And, oh, speaking of Prom, I went with Beverly just as friends, too.
Carl and Aeriel became officially together when we’re thirteen years old. Well… that’s their story. Both of them are back in Connecticut—Carl on his first year in college and Aeriel in her last year in high school.
“Patrick, there’s something I want to ask you,” Alphonse said, shuffling awkwardly.
I raised an eyebrow. What’s this all about? “What is it, Alphonse?” I asked. I refuse calling Alphonse Dad. It feels so wrong. There’s only one Dad I ever had and that’s going to be my real Dad, the first man my Mom married. Alphonse understands, of course. He’s a great guy and he was best friends with my Dad when he was still alive, after all.
“I found something in your car yesterday,” he said, handing me a picture. “The door of your car was open and I saw that picture on the ground. Who is the girl in the picture?”
I grabbed the picture out of his hand and glanced at it. Oh shit.
It was the picture of me and Kate in Prom. It’s one of those pictures that I managed to keep and stay hidden. How did it go inside my car? I smiled nervously to Alphonse, frantically thinking of a lie to tell. “I don’t know what this is,” I lied smoothly. “You know I went to Prom with Beverly. I don’t know this girl.”
