Twelve Years Later
Kate nodded and turned back to me. My eyes were shining with unshed tears and she leaned forward to hug me. “I love you, Patrick Hall.”
“I love you, Kate Roberts,” I breathed. “Goodbye, my angel.”
“Goodbye, my human,” she said and flew away. My tears fell down my eyes, remembering her plead that I won’t be ashamed to cry in front of her.
“Patrick, you better wake up. Carl and Aeriel are here,” a voice said. It sounded so far away yet I could hear it clearly.
I opened my eyes and saw Kaye, bending down to me. I smiled at her and she pressed her lips to mine. “You better wake up, dear,” she whispered as she brushed her lips to mine. “Carl and Aeriel are here with their newborn baby.”
I smiled and nodded. “Okay,” I said and kissed her again deeply. When I let go of her, the both of us were breathless. “After twelve years and you’re still amazing.”
She blushed and poked me playfully. “Well, as long as you’re still handsome.”
“You’re very beautiful, Mrs. Kaye Hall,” I said and kissed the back of her right hand. The door opened and in came my six-year-old daughter, Bethany Hall. She got her mother’s brown-hair and my grey eyes. She beamed at us and I smiled back at her. “Hi, Bethany! Where’s Charlotte?”
“She’s downstairs with Uncle Carl and Aunt Aeriel! Baby Kate is so cute! I want to pinch her cheeks,” Bethany cooed.
“Don’t do that,” Kaye said firmly. “Kate is only a baby.”
She gave me one last kiss at my forehead and went out to be with Bethany. I stretched and washed my face at the bathroom. I walked out of my room, still in my boxers and white shirt. And there was my four-year-old daughter, Charlotte Hall, climbing up the stairs. “Daddy!” she squealed.
“Daughter!” I said teasingly. She laughed and she ran to me. I bent on my knees and carried her princess-like style. “How’s daddy’s little girl doing, huh?”
“Fine! Uncle Carl’s baby is so cute, Daddy! Can we have a baby, too?” Charlotte asked, using her puppy-eye expression.
I laughed. “You tell Mommy that, okay? And let’s see if she’ll agree.” I carried her down the stairs and to the living room. And there was Carl, carrying his newborn baby. Aeriel was sitting on the couch with Kaye, talking about those things mothers talk about.
Carl caught my eye and beamed. “Patrick! Look at your new goddaughter!”
I grinned and put Charlotte down and she went off, looking for her sister. I picked up Baby Kate from Carl’s arms. She looked so cute and peaceful. I smiled at her. I know she’s going to be just as beautiful as the girl she was named after.
When Carl told me five months earlier that the gender of the baby was a girl, I told them to name it Kate. They asked me why but I just told them it rhymes with Kaye. But, no. I want it to be named after Kate Roberts, my guardian angel.
After all those years, I haven’t forgotten her.
“She looked so beautiful, Carl. Congratulations for being a Daddy,” I said, as I handed Baby Kate back to him and slapped his shoulder playfully. “Too bad BJ’s not here, huh? We should be together.”
