Chapter Thirty Three
Penny’s POV:
Colton didn’t set me down until we got up to our room. I was still breathing heavily but I was a lot calmer.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” He asked and raised an eyebrow.
“No, she just gets me so MAD,” I said. I could tell my face was getting red again. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself.
“I know,” Was all he said as he pulled me into his arms. I leaned back on his chest. He was leaning on the backboard of the bed. Finally feeling at ease I closed my eyes and smiled to myself. It’s ok, Colton doesn’t like Sarah, he likes me, I reassured myself.
I honestly don’t know what I would do if I lost him. Within such a short period of time, he wedged himself into my life, making himself important to me.
We must have fell asleep like that because both of us woke up startled at my phone ringing loudly. Groaning Colton said, “Leave it,”
“Could be important,” I said climbing out of his lap and over to my phone. I looked at the time and frowned. It was 2 in the morning, who could be calling me?
“Hello?” I answered groggy from sleep.
“Penny?” I heard Trevor say. His voice was a little higher than normal and I could tell he was crying.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, suddenly wide awake. I waited patiently as he continued to cry into the phone.
“It...it’s….it’s…,” He said in between sobs. Oh my god what happened.
“What? What is it Trevor?” I asked getting more and more anxious. Tears were starting to pool at my eyes.
“It’s….my….my...mom,” he said, his voice breaking at the last part. I dropped the phone crumpling to the ground. No, no this isn’t happening. Not to my parent’s, not to my aunt. This is all just a bad dream and I’m going to wake up in Colton’s arms at Aunt Claire’s house to the smell of her pancakes.
“Penny!” Colton said and was over to me and the phone in just a moment. He picked the phone off of the ground and put it to his ear.
“Hello? Trevor?” He said into the phone, but I barely heard him. I couldn’t feel anything. I was numb. My vision blurred with my tears, all falling into my lap.
I felt my body leave the ground but I had no energy to look up at Colton or to where he was carrying me. He took my face in his hands and made me look at him. All I did was cry even more. He let go of my face and pulled me to him, my head was on his shoulder as he hushed me drawing little circles on my lower back.
“Wh-what ha-ha-happened?” I asked between hiccups, making myself cry all over again.
“Shhhhh,” Colton said hugging me tight, “She was in a car crash,” That was it. That was my breaking point. My parents, now this. I closed my eyes and I broke down. I cried into Colton’s shoulder until there was nothing else left. I cried until all that was coming out of me were hiccups and little moans.
“I-I-I w-wanna go-o see h-her,” I said between hiccups. I looked up at his face and I saw his eyes were puffy and red, not as bad as mine must have been though.
He nodded and got up, went into my bag, laid out a new pair of clothes and did the same for his. I realized we never changed out of our bathing suits. Watching him go into the bathroom, I stripped and put on the new clothes.
When he came back out, he slung both bags over his shoulders, took my hand and the room key and we walked out the door hand in hand.
In the elevator it was quiet. I tried to wrap my mind around what just happened. Deep breaths, I told myself, trying to calm myself down. Walking out of the elevator to the lobby, I ran right into Sarah.
Stumbling back she said, “What the hell! Watch where you’re going!” She said looking up and seeing who ran into her, “What’s your problem? Don’t have enough attention as it is?” She scoffed. My vision went red at her comment. I had it with her. In one swift movement, I let go of Colton’s hand, brought my arm back and punched her square in her perfect little nose.
She gasped holding her hand to her nose, her eyes wide, “What the hell?!” She screeched. I smirked and took Colton’s hand dragging him past her and to the front desk.
Even after we checked out, I looked back to find her still frozen, eyes wide, hands clutching her nose. As tears fell from my eyes again about what was to come, I walked to the door with a heavy heart but great victory.
