Devyn
September 29, 1986
"What the heck?" I yell after my body collapses against the mulch of the small playground. I groan in pain, rubbing my hand against my pounding head, now feeling lightheaded. Donald pushed me off the monkey bars. I clumsily rise up, almost falling again, quickly wiping off my pants and shirt, pulling the mulch out of my hair. I frown as I watch his long body hang from the bars, almost touching the ground. I pull his leg, making him stumble a bit and he doesn't fall. I exert force on him with my inadequate muscles aggressively being the fault of his falling, now. "Devyn, chill!" He calls out, laying there on his back.
"You pushed me first!" I shrug, while he lays there with his arm extending upward waiting for me to help him. Instead of aiding him, I walk away. "You think I'm not gonna push you back? It doesn't work like that, weirdo." I roll my eyes, climbing the steps again, then realizing the words that came out of my mouth forming into an 'o' shape. "Oops, sorry." I apologize quickly after seeing the angry facial expression. "Just act like I didn't say that."
We came to the local park right after school because we were bored. We've been here for about an hour, talking and laughing with one another. Today is his birthday, so his parents kind of let him off their leash today. That whole situation that occured at school still runs across my mind, but things were better after it. He apologized for his odd behavior and I apologized for reacting the way I did, even though I still think he deserved it. I guess I kind of was pressuring him into things and continued to do something he doesn't like, but him calling me Jade just made the synpathy I felt for him at the moment quickly diminish and I'm still slightly furious about it. But the thing I'm most worried about is what is the problem with him. The problem he has to solve that he forgot about. I tried to ask him if I could do anything to help or what he was meaning by those words but he shrugged it off and I haven't asked since then. I want to ask now, but I don't want to ruin his birthday with my curiosity.
I go down the slide tunnel, feeling rug burns on my thighs form. I walk over to the park bench sitting there, watching little kids play. I see his lanky body come over towards me with a goofy smile. He plops next to me with his legs wide open. "Close your legs." I tell him, but he only opens them wider. "You are so annoying." I roll my eyes. "Every time I tell you to do something you do the opposite."
"Well because you not my momma." He simply says, looking off at the kids too.
"You don't even listen to her." I laugh at his attempt to get smart with me. His large hand mushes my face, sending my neck jolting back. It kind of hurts and he does it often, always resulting in me hitting him back. "Look, just because it's your birthday doesn't mean you can't get your ass beat."
"Get my ass beat?" Amusement runs over his face as his teeth graze across his bottom lip with a goofy smirk. "Get my ass beat? By who?" He shifts his entire body, seeking everywhere dramatically.
"Me." I push his shoulder with a lot of force but he doesn't flinch. He laughs at my attempts to push him frequently. "You ain't beating nobody's ass here." He throws his head back, circling it in motions. Him cracking his neck has become a guilty pleasure sound to my ears. "Man, fuck you." I laugh, shaking my head. "I mean, you can whenever." He raises his eyebrows with a simple look on his face. I open my mouth to say something, then closing it back smiling. I feel myself blushing at his words, not being able to control myself.
"But you won't really let me.."
"Devyn." He sternly says through his teeth. "Right, you know what. Nevermind. I'm not even going to bring it up. Let me not annoy you today, like I do all the time." I roll my eyes slowly, sighing to myself.
