DJW

I open the door with my elbow carrying the sodas inside my room. Brendon looks up and smiles. I set the cans down and start to close the door, and then I hear mom.

"USE PROTECTION, BOYS!!"

"What the hell, mom??!" I yell back and then turn to Brendon. He's doubled over with a face red from laughter.

My face is sure as hell red from embarassment. Yet, I start to laugh too. More like cackle, because we're both on the floor unable to breathe.

Brendon tries to speak through giggling. "D-do you think she meant it?" He wipes tears from his eyes.

"No, I don't think so." I make an attempt to catch my breath. We both calm down after a few minutes. Our faces are still slight shades of pink.

"Man, your mom's hilarious." Brendon says.

I shrug. "Yeah, she's okay. Sometimes she's too nosy, though. Wants me to be more social." I say, taking a sip of my newly opened Dr. Pepper.

"Maybe that's a good thing. My mom's nice, but not as happy and chatty as your mom." He says.

"Honestly, someone doesn't have to be loquacious for people to like them." I tell Brendon.

He nods. "You're right. I mean, you're one of the most anti-social people ever, and I like you." We both start laughing again, and I accidentally...

Knock over my Dr. Pepper.

"Shit! Ugh, this is the second time in my room!" I run my hands through my hair. I pick up the can and discard it along with the leftover soda inside that didn't spill.

"I'll help! Where are the paper towels?" Brendon exclaims.

I run to the kitchen with Brendon. He takes the whole paper towel roll and I get some rags. We start to race up the stairs to clean the mess. The wood floors creak as we get to my room.

"What happened?" Mom yells from the bottom of the stairs.

"Dallon spilled the soda again!" Brendon snickers.

"Hey! Fuck you!" I whisper yell.

"Why do you have white carpet if this is going to keep happening?" He gestures to both soda stains. One from a few years ago next to my bed, and the one from a few minutes ago.

"Maybe I should just get carpet that's dark-colored." I say, while soaking up the spilled Dr. Pepper.

Brendon and I finish cleaning the mess up when we hear the doorbell ring. "I'll get it!" I yell so my mom can hear. Brendon walks with me to the door, and I open it.

"Ugh, do I have to go home?" Brendon questions as we see his mom standing in the doorway. I don't really want him to leave yet. Oh well. Don't threaten me with a good time.

"Hi, Dallon. And yes, Brendon, you do have to go. We also got a call from the school saying you got into a fight?" Brendon's mom said. I let Mrs. Urie in and we all sat on the couch while Brendon begins to explain.

"So there's this asshole named Brent, and he practically started a fight with me. I wasn't going to fight at first, but he kicked Dallon really hard and called him names. So... I landed Brent in the nurse's office." Brendon sheepishly smiles.

"Is that all?" Mrs. Urie asks.

I speak up. "Oh, Mr. Wentz excused us from school. It really wasn't Brendon's or my fault, honestly. And we're not missing any work either."

She nods. "Okay. It was for a valid reason. I get that. But we really do need to go, Brendon. We have dinner plans." My mom comes into the room then, and both of our mothers start squealing. Like, high pitched, "we're best friends and our sons should be in love" squealing. Nice.

"Grace! I haven't seen you in days, how are you? The boys are getting along, did you see??"

"I'm fine but ohmygosh yes, they look so happy now!!! Brendon was just moping around the house all the time but now look! They're adorable together!"

He gasps and taps on my shoulder. "I... I don't mope around the house, by the way." He shakes his head slightly. I nod.

"Dallon can finally start to get to know more people! He only talks with that Ryan Seaman and Spencer Smith..? Yeah! He barely even invites them to our house, I'm surprised he still has friends!"

I interject. "Hey! What the hell?? I have friends!"

Both our mothers start talking fast and we're left sitting on the couch. You can't even make out what they're saying at this point.

Brendon and I stare at each other with wide eyes until he blinks and turns to his mom.

"Hey, mom? I thought we had dinner plans?" Brendon raises his eyebrows.

Mrs. Urie has a confused face for a split second and afterwards, a shocked one.

"Oh Leann, I'm sorry but we have to leave. Brendon just reminded me we're late for something." Mrs. Urie says.

My mom smiles. "That's fine. I need to start dinner anyways. It's getting kind of late."

We all exchange goodbyes and Brendon and his mom walk out the door to their own house across the street.
