"Miss...Miss it's time to wake up." A feminine voice roused me from sleep the next morning. My eyes opened to see three women anxiously waiting for me to haul my ass out of bed. The sun was barely rising and it was far too early for me to function as a polite person.
"Why must I wake up at such an awful hour? Surely, breakfast isn't this early?" I groaned while sitting up and fighting back a yawn.
"Of course not, but it takes time to dress and prepare for the day. A lady always rises early so as to never be late for mealtimes." One of the women explained slowly, my scowl did little to scare them.
"Can't I just throw on some leggings and a sweatshirt?" I grumbled sourly.
"A lady wears dresses and avoids arguing as it is unbecoming behavior." A different woman piped up despite my glare. Somehow, they managed to get me out of bed and I washed my face before brushing my teeth and returning to my bedroom. My nightgown was slipped over my head and replaced with another ridiculously fancy dress. I refused a corset this time and my ribs thanked me profusely. My feet slid into a pair of slippers that matched the turquoise fabric of the dress with extremely detailed copper embroidery. I kept my hair in a simple french braid down my back to avoid another night of ripping the intricate little braids apart with my sore fingers.
"You look lovely, Miss." One of the women smiled and the other two were fast to agree with her. I felt like a doll when they tried to put makeup on me and protested enough for them to give up. Apparently a lady was supposed to be escorted places instead of roaming around unattended but I'd never been very ladylike. I was starving and I wasn't going to wait for some random person to collect me for breakfast. After about three minutes after the three women left I snuck out of my room. The slippers made soft rustling noises on the ground as I walked down the hallway. I followed my nose to locate the dining room and it failed me.
"Fuck it all, I'm lost." I snarled under my breath before rounding a corner. I collided with another person and nearly landed on my ass from the force. Somehow, the other person managed to grab my arms and keep me from falling backward.
"You're a cute one. What's a delicate thing like you doing wandering without a chaperone?" The voice had my gaze traveling up to a pair of silver eyes. A glance around showed the man holding my upper arms was accompanied by two others.
"I'm capable of taking care of myself." I snapped as I jerked out of his grasp. The silver eyed man was well built and had dark brown hair and rough stubble on his jaw. He had quite a bit of height on me and could probably snap me in two easily. His friends were about the same only they were twins with black hair that was cut short and dark eyes.
"What family are you from? I've never seen you here before." The man asked with a brow raised in interest. Family? What on earth was he talking about?
"Aspen! Even you should know better than to wander off alone. Come on, we're your chaperones until my brother is available. Oh, Killian...I didn't realize you were back just yet." Arabella called down the hallway, her mother close behind her.
"Cyrus found a new woman?" Killian asked with a condescending smirk down at me. My jaw dropped in surprise and Arabella audibly gasped.
"Oh no, of course not. Aspen is...well she's a umm. She's Jasper's guest." Arabella stumbled with her words and I became suspicious. Why wouldn't she say I was a Succubus? Why didn't she say the truth?
"Well, then I shall escort the lovely lady to breakfast. It would be rude of me not to. After all, Jasper has never been as skilled at attending to a lady's needs as well as I am." Killian slid an arm around my waist and pulled me down the hallway. Arabella and her mother followed and behind them were Killian's friends.
"Touch me without my permission again and I will snap every bone in your hand." I hissed while attempting to pry his arm off of me with brute force. The man chuckled darkly before pulling me even closer. He leaned down until his lips touched my ear.
"Shh, threats coming out of that pretty mouth of yours will give away your secret, my lady." He retorted smugly. What secret? I didn't have a chance to snarl out another snarky comment because Killian dragged me into a large dining hall. He pulled me over to a table filled with other rugged looking men and kept me close by keeping his arm wrapped around my waist.
"And who is tonight's bedmate, Captain?" One of the men asked cheekily. I had been drinking water and choked on it in shock at the words.
"Oh, I think not. I actually have standards." I quipped before shrugging Killian's arm off of me.
"Looks like this little lady isn't interested in ya, Killian." A different man laughed and I watched the annoyance flash in Killian's eyes.
"It's the ones that put up a fight that are the most fun." He purred crudely urging an audible gag from my throat.
"Killian, I'll be collecting Aspen now. She's my responsibility while she is here." Jasper had entered the dining hall and appeared behind me. Within seconds he had pulled me to my feet and led me across the room.
"I really don't like that guy." I stated adamantly after I was seated next to Jasper and pushing food around on my plate.
"He's a close friend but his appetite for women clouds his thinking. Why are you not eating?" Jasper gave my plate a harsh stare.
"Dealing with handsy men kills my appetite." I murmured but my mind was elsewhere. I missed my friends. I also missed pants and my cell phone.
"I'm taking you flying today and you need to eat. Having you pass out during the lessons will be problematic." He speared a strawberry in his fork and pressed it to my lips. I stubbornly glared but when it became clear he wasn't going to back off, I gave in and ate the damn berry. To avoid him feeding me more I angrily ate my own food.
"I'm done." I grumbled after finishing the food on my plate. Jasper gave me a satisfied smile. Arabella was sat across from me and she gazed from Jasper to me throughout the meal. "So, when is this flying lesson supposed to happen?" I asked tiredly.
"Right now." Jasper smirked before grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the room. If only I'd known just what I'd signed up for. Maybe I would have put up a fight instead of letting him walk me to my probable death. Who would've thought dragons were such sneaky and slippery serpents?
