I walk into our bedroom to see Peggy packing a small yellow duffel bag.
"Where are you off to?" I ask, leaning against the door frame.
"I'm sleeping over with Angelica and Eliza at their dorm. Eliza and Maria had a small fight but Angelica claims that she's been in the bathtub with a tub of ice cream for the past couple of hours. It's procedure," She explains, swinging her bag over her shoulder. "I'll be back here tomorrow evening. Alex will be here soon, so you won't be alone."
She kisses me for a moment, and I intertwine my fingers with hers. I look down at our hands and back into her eyes. She smiles.
"I love you."
"Be safe," I warn, "It's going to start raining soon so you better get over there."
"You're right," She says, walking out of the bedroom, through the living room, and into the corridor that leads to the main door. "Goodbye, John," She bids, and kisses me on the cheek.
I wave her goodbye as I close the door. It had already started to sprinkle outside, so I hope Alex will be home before it starts raining heavily.
I take a seat at our couch and open my laptop to get started on my homework that was yet to be overdue surprisingly. It was now 9pm, and I was already growing to be drowsy. Before I even begin to get started on my assignment, I've already dozed off.
••
I am awaken three hours later by the faint sound of grunting? Crying? I rub my eyes, and in a groggy haze, I attempt to make my way to the sound, which seems to be coming from the bathroom. I slowly creak the door open, and I see Alexander leaned against the bathtub, his hair flying everywhere, tears staining down his face, frantically scribbling into his blue notebook. He was shaking.
"Alexander?" I whisper, kneeling down to his level. He slowly looks up, and his blood shot eyes are the only thing I see in the dimmed bathroom.
"J-John-" He begins to say, but he is interrupted by a loud strike of lightning outside. He yelps and throws his arms around me. I sit down next to him, and he sits on my lap. I stroke his smooth and straight black hair in a vain attempt to calm him. He stutters something incoherent.
"Shh," I coax, and he lays his head in my lap.
"A hurricane," He mutters, laying his hand on top of mine.
"I wouldn't quite call it that. More of a thunderstorm," I whisper in his ear. The thunder rumbles the ground beneath us. "Are you okay?"
He slowly shakes his head. "No," He whispers back in reply.
"Shh, come on," I say, putting my arms underneath his legs and underneath his neck so I can pick him up. "We're going to go to bed."
He weakly nods and limps in my arms. I pick him up and I am surprised at how light he is. I slowly make me way to Peggy and my bedroom. I set him down in my bed. I look at his red face. I wipe away his tears with my thumb.
"I'll sleep in your bed for tonight," I say, rising from the bed. A flash of lightning strikes right outside the window, and I can't even deny that I jumped at it. He grabs my arm and I look back at him.
"Stay?"
I sigh. "Alright," I say after hesitating for a quick moment. I hop in the bed and stay a safe half foot away from him.
"Tell me about yourself, Alexander."
"Okay," He mutters, shifting himself so he's facing me. I do the same, and we're practically nose to nose. I don't move back.
"My dad left. He just got up and left. I can still remember my brother, James, and I were listening from the other room. I didn't even get to say goodbye," He says. As he's explaining, I stare at his pink lips as he speaks.
"When I was 12, my mom and I got really sick. She held me in my arms as she died.
"When I was 17, a hurricane destroyed my town. My brother drowned, but I couldn't seem to. I couldn't seem to die.
"I wrote an article about seeing all my loved ones, the only loved ones I had left, die. And strangers raised enough for me to book passage on a ship that was New York bound. And here I am
now.""Wow," is all I could reply back. "I'm sorry."
"It's alright," He whispers. "Can I hold you?" He mutters.
"Yeah." He wraps his arms around me as he snuggles into my chest. I hesitantly wrap my arms around his small frame. We both doze off into a somewhat peaceful sleep.
