Steve (POV)
A week later Tony sent out a text inviting us to a " little " celebration party at the tower and then to move back in. I have two hours until the party. I decide to use this time to sketch a little.I let the pencil guide my hand. Not noticing what I'm drawing until it's done. When it's done, I look down at the sketch and I am greeted with Natasha's wide eyes looking at me. Her sitting on an unmade bed. Hair messy from sleep. She's beautiful, of course not as beautiful as she is in person but my imagination will have to suffice for now. I check the time and realize I only have twenty minutes.
Moving at a quick pace, I put some clothes and my sketch book in a duffel bag to bring to the tower. Then I change into a simple suit and head out. On the way there all I can think about is Natasha. I picture her like the sketch except the bed she is sitting on is mine and she really is looking right at me. My ears burn as I feel myself blush before I erase the thought from my head, feeling guilty.
The second I step into the not so little party my eyes frantically search for Natasha as if by instinct. Before I can spot her I'm greeted by a rush of guests.
" Steve! Good to see you ! You look great." Pepper squeals as she hugs me. I make common conversation for a few more minutes until finally, I can slip through the crowds.
I work my way through the guests until I spot her. She's standing by the bar with what I'm guessing is vodka in her glass. I walk towards her. She notices me and lifts her head. " Steve. You clean up nice." She greets as she raises an eyebrow. I'm all too aware of her eyes studying me from head to foot.
"Thanks. You don't look to bad yourself." I remark, giving her the same attention.
She's wearing a shortish black dress with ruffles across the top. She has changed her hair back to wavy curls these past few months, that fall along her face and shoulders.
" I mean you look beautiful." I backtrack trying not to undermine how gorgeous she looks. She doesn't answer just gives me a smile. I wish I knew what was going on in her head."So you stayed." I recall trying to continue the conversation. I don't want to ever stop talking to her.
"This seems to be my life now. I mean S.H.E.I.L.D. It's my place. At least for now."
She explains, sliding onto a bar stool and I slid in next to her.
"That's good right? Knowing you have a place." I ask, not sure what to make of her response.
"Well it's better than having no place at all." She concludes , leaving me just as clueless as before."And you? The man out of his time, how is he adjusting to all this?" She adds, her emerald eyes studying me.
"Honestly?" I question with a sigh, sinking into my seat.
"I expect no less from you." She says with a signature smirk."Its a lot." I reply, telling her the whole truth. "I miss the days where just getting an old box computer to turn on was impressive." I confessed, knowing she would at least try to understand. It feels good to have someone to really talk to after 70 years. It feels even better knowing that she's that person for me.
"It's too bad life's not that simple anymore." She agrees.
"Our jobs would be a lot easier if it were" I respond. She opens her mouth but before she speaks I swear she moves closer to me. Just an inch, maybe more, but when she does speak her lips hover a centimeter away from my cheek and I can feel her warm breath on my skin.
"Or maybe we're just in the wrong business, Rogers." And with that she slides off the stool and gives my shoulder a squeeze before walking away.
I manage to survive through the party which is a lot more dull without the red heads presence, until the last guest leaves and when they do I immediately head towards the elevator. And press the button to my floor.
I sleep a dreamless sleep which is rare for me. But I am awoken to the sound of screams. A terrible, yet all too familiar, heart wrenching sob. I creep out of bed and follow the sound of them. My bare feet cold against the tile floors of the tower.
Loud then soft. Softer and softer, until they are whimper. I recognize them instantly as Nat's. Once I arrive at her door I slowly turn the nob. But not slowly enough because the second I open the door I am met with Natasha aiming the gun she keeps under her pillow right at me.
It's not the first time this has happened. Sometimes it's me or other members of the team. Everybody seems to have nightmares. No body talks about it. It's like a silent agreement. Everybody has their usually person and I accidentally became Natasha's.
"Natasha it's okay it's just me Steve." I say in my best reassuring voice. She looks terrified. Her forehead is damp from sweat. I hate seeing her like this. I can't imagine how badly she has been hurt.
"It's just me." I repeat, again and again, my hands up in mock surrender. She is breathing heavily but moves the gun down just an inch as I move closer to her. I can tell she still hadn't come to her senses yet. "It's just me Nat. You're safe." I whisper again.
Her hands slightly shake around the gun and soon I am kneeling on her bed, her eyes trained on me. Slowly I reach out and wrap my hand around the gun.
"It's just me Nat." I reassure her as I slip my free hand around her waist.I pry the gun out of her hands as she slowly melts into me. When she thinks I can't she she lets a single tear fall and I swipe it away with my thumb. I hold her tightly until the shaking stops. Then I gently lie down with her still in my arms.
I kiss her forehead and then she buries her head into my chest. As I let her use my arm as a pillow I smooth hair out of her face. She looks up at me giving me the look which means she wants me to hold her. I wrap my arms back around her waist and hold her close until morning.
