"Do you guys think we should've invited Virgil?" Logan asked, adjusting his glasses nervously as he walked down the path with his three friends. Thomas and Roman exchanged an exasperated look, but Patton nodded in agreement with his friend.
"He's our friend too! I mean...we've been all together since forever! Didn't any of you guys try to invite him? I did, but he wouldn't answer his phone!" Patton said with a slight pout. Roman scoffed.
"Come on, it's not so bad without him here. I could definitely go without his doom-and-gloom attitude all the time," Roman said with a slight laugh. Patton gasped, Thomas shrugged indifferently, and Logan looked absolutely appalled.
"Roman, I can't believe you would say something like that! Virgil used to be your best friend!" Patton said, going a bit into "dad mode". Roman groaned and rolled his eyes before pulling out his phone, dialing Virgil's number and pressing it to his phone. After a minute, it reached voice mail.
"Wha-? How...dare...he..." Roman tried to call again, and again, and again, but still got no answer. Logan's worry grew and he felt a small twinge of panic, but Thomas still looked like he didn't care, and Patton was shifting from foot to foot next to Roman.
"Where do you think he is? Where does Virgil go when he's upset?" Logan asked, looking to the others for an answer. He hadn't known Virgil nearly as long as Roman and Thomas had. Roman sighed.
"He's probably sulking on the library roof or something. He volunteers there, so he goes up to the room to think and whatever," Roman muttered.
"I guess we better go get him then," Thomas said, his voice a little too cheerful, a little too forced. Patton nodded and turned around, instantly dashing back to his car. Logan followed quickly behind, and Roman and Thomas exchanged a look before following their friends, thinking that they were just being overdramatic. Virgil was fine. Right?
Virgil stood on the roof of the library, his fists clenched as he stared down at the busy streets below. He ripped the buzzing phone out of his pocket and chucked it as far as he could, watching with a twisted satisfaction as it hurtled towards the asphalt, just like he would in a few moments. Virgil could feel his heart hammering in his ears as he stepped closer to the edge.
Virgil couldn't remember the last time he felt happy. Maybe it was when he met Roman and Thomas when he was about three years old, but he really didn't know. He meant nothing to anyone, not even his friends. He laughed, remembering how close they all once were, and then he had to go and screw it up.
"I guess this is goodbye," Virgil sighed, not really sure why he was saying anything. No one was here, and no one cared. Still, it was nice to get his feelings out.
"I'll always be a waste of space, unnecessary to this world, so why not just end it all, right? It's not like anyone needs me. The world would end before anyone actually needed me," Virgil said, letting out a pained laugh.
"Goodbye Patton, Logan, Roman, Thomas, mom, dad, and anyone else I forgot. Sorry, I didn't write I note, I didn't think anyone would read it." Virgil was trembling and his toes were hanging over the edge. Just one more step and this would all be over and done with.
"Virgil, wait!" someone cried, and Virgil gasped as someone grabbed the back of his hood and yanked him away from the side of the room. He hissed in pain as he fell to the ground and clawed at the arms that suddenly wrapped around his waist.
"Let go of me! Leave me alone!" Virgil howled. Thomas winced as Virgil's nails dug into his hands and he dropped his thrashing friend but stood between him and the edge of the roof. Virgil glared at him and flinched as he felt two hands grip his shoulders. He whirled around to see an extremely worried Patton with tears in his eyes.
"What are you guys doing here?" Virgil snapped, wrapping his arms around himself tightly and looking at each of his fake friends in turn. They all looked genuinely worried and scared, what the heck was going on?
"We got worried about you, Verge! You wouldn't answer your phone, and none of us have seen you in weeks! It's like you just disappeared off the face of this earth!" Thomas said, his voice cracking. Was he...crying?
"Look, It's nice to see you all here, worrying about me, but it's not necessary. I need to do this, for you, and for everyone else," Virgil said with a sigh. Logan shook his head, wringing his hands. Oh God, was he crying too?!
"Virgil, you cannot do this, You are loved very much by all of us, and we don't- I don't know what I'd do if I lost you," Logan said, choking up and stumbling over his words. Virgil had never seen him so emotional.
"He's right, kiddo. We care about you so much! Please don't leave us!" Patton pleaded, clasping his hands together. Virgil shook his head. He came here to do something, and he would finish.
"Thank you all for helping me- well, most of you-" Virgil muttered, backing up slowly. Roman grabbed his wrist and he froze, looking at the boy he used to consider his best friend with wide eyes.
"V-Virgil, I...I know we don't get along like we used to, but you still mean so much to me. I love spending time with you, cracking jokes with you, singing cheesy Dinsey songs together..." Virgil chuckled softly and Roman smiled.
"I know nothing is going to be the way it was when we were little. We've changed, and grown, and made new friends. But...please...don't do this to the others. You make them- us -complete. Give me a chance to make it up to you again, please," Roman said softly, taking both of Virgil's hands in his own and rubbing the back of them with his thumbs. Virgil blinked and then slowly began to smile, tears that had been welling up in his eyes spilling down his cheeks. He tackled Roman in a hug, arms wrapped firmly around his waist as he buried his face in Roman's shoulder. His overdramatic best friend quickly returned the embrace and the other three teens quickly joined, enveloping Virigl in their loving arms.
