Patton's smile is always fake. He is all of Thomas' emotions, not just his happiness. Everyone always has some sort of negative thought in their mind. Pure happiness is usually only a momentary thing. Because Patton is Thomas' emotions, and Thomas doesn't feel purely happy all the time, he can't really, truly smile.
