Autumn Nights

It's that time of year when the leaves begin to shrivel and die, transforming into hues of gold, scarlet, and rusty brown as the remnants of summer fade away, as the season of decay [autumn] arrives. You glance up at the gleaming, twinkling white lights that stream across the ceiling of the rustic wooden cabin, the array of lights supported by the cabin's wooden beams. Warmth continuously radiates on your skin, the heat igniting from the fiery orange and red embers kisses your cheeks, and makes the entire cabin nice and toasty from the lit fireplace. You're sitting in front of the fire on the circular red carpet mat placed in front of it, enjoying the warm feeling. The entire cabin was decorated for Halloween, which isn't for another two weeks, but Rydel insisted that everybody helped decorate the cabin with Halloween lights, fake pumpkins with carved smiles, hanging little ghost figures in the windows, and autumn scented candles on the center of the large table in the kitchen. The cabin is quite large, one of the largest to be rented on the campground. It fits ten people, with five bedrooms, one of them has two single beds, one (the master room) has a king size bed, and the others have queen beds.

Weeks ago Ellington suggested that he and Rydel go on a nice fall getaway in a cozy cabin surrounded by nature and scenery, but those plans were altered by Rydel accidentally renting out the largest, ten-person-cabin on the campground in Wyoming. Ellington was slightly irritated with her at first, until Rydel added that maybe they could invite the rest of her siblings and their significant others, which he favored. And when your one-month boyfriend Ross invited you to spend a long weekend in the middle of October camping in Wyoming with he and his siblings with their girlfriends/boyfriends, you were kind of shocked. You met his siblings a few times, and you even met Riker's girlfriend, Savannah Latimer who seemed sweet, but it seemed abrupt when he asked you to join them. He called you one day when you were in your car, driving to your parent's house, and he said the question, adding, "yeah I figured it'd be nice. Besides, all my brothers are bringing their girlfriends, except for Rocky for obvious reasons, and I thought I'd ask you to come too. I don't want to be like Rocky going single." You laughed in response, not knowing how else to reply, but agreed to go. It wasn't the kind of invitation that was ideal, but you thought it would be fun and an opportunity for you to become more friendly with Ross's family and maybe connect with Ross more.

This first month of you and Ross has been simple, going very steady. At first you two were friends, then you actually asked Ross to go out one night for dinner and a few drinks, and he seemed to have feelings for you, too. Then after a few more dates, like going to the movies, a fair, and driving around the city, Ross asked you to be his girlfriend. But as you guys started dating, it felt like their was some kind of void between you two, or coming from Ross in other words. He held your hand, flirted with you, and kissed you, but he was always kinda stiff and distant. You don't know why, and you've never asked, you feel like it's only one person in this relationship sometimes, but you just hoped this trip would help.

And here you are, sitting by yourself in front of the hot, burning fire. You guys just arrived today, and you haven't seen Ross since the awkward situation of who-is-going-to-sleep-where when you guys first got here, exploring the cabin. Everybody climbed the stairs, and Rocky claimed the only room with two separate beds, Rydel and Ellington have the master bedroom, Riker and Savannah took one of the queen bedrooms, Ryland and his girlfriend took the other queen bedroom, which left you and Ross with the last queen bedroom. You slowly shuffled inside, with Ross behind you, and you both set your suitcases down. The room was a decent size, overlooking the steep mountains scattered with trees that were changing color, and a small creek running through the bottom of the hill.

The idea of sleeping in a bed with Ross shouldn't make you feel uncomfortable, but it did. And it must've made him feel the same way because when you stood in front of one of the windows, gazing out, saying how beautiful the view is, Ross just mumbled something incoherently and left. After that you just unpacked, huffing and scoffing, then walked downstairs to see all the guys had gone out to find firewood, and the girls were busy decorating and starting to cook dinner so you helped.
