I don't remember falling asleep. But what I do remember is the mess I woke up to. I knew I should have told James and Anna that Fabian was here. That he was a wolf. But it slipped my mind. And I knew that I was in so much trouble. But I didn't care. I was too angry to care about the consequences.
James and Anna were standing on the porch with Quinn. Finnegan, Vicki and Jaxson had shifted and were surrounding Fabian, growling. Sage was leaning over me, gripping my shoulders, worry etched all over his face. I pushed him away from me and shot up out of the chair. I didn't know what I was doing but Fabian didn't deserve to get hurt just because my pack was misinformed. I mean, James' pack. Not mine. I don't consider myself a part of it anymore. I hadn't for days.
I ran up behind Fabian and dropped to the ground, sliding in front of him. I spun around and wrapped my arms around his neck. He was quaking. I'd never seen Fabian scared and I never wanted to again. Fear wasn't an emotion that I associated with Fabian. He was Fabian. He was the type to fight off a whole nest of vampires just for kicks. The idiot laughed in the face of danger. He didn't do scared. But seeing him afraid of his own kind? That was a feeling that didn't sit well with me.
I kept an arm slung around Fabian's neck as I turned around, glaring at the other wolves. Jaxson stopped growling and backed away. Vicki and Finn quickly followed. Fabian wasn't trembling as much anymore, just slightly shivering. Keeping a hand on Fabian's head, I stood up slowly. Fabian whimpered and nudged my leg, trying to get even closer to me. I glared at my family, daring them to try anything as I lead Fabian away from them toward the house. Anna had moved from her mate's side and was standing in front of the door.
"I will not let that mongrel in my house," Anna growled.
"How could you bring a rogue into our home?" James questioned, raising an eyebrow at Fabian.
"He's not a rogue!" I argued. "I know the rules, James! If Fabian was a rogue I wouldn't have even associated myself with him, let alone bring him here!"
"Well, then where's his pack?" Quinn chimed in. "We're the only pack in the district."
"He doesn't have a pack." I snapped. "But he's not a rogue either."
I took a few deep breaths, trying to relax and calm down.
"Look, how about we all just go inside, sit down and talk about this?" I suggested. "Fabian isn't a threat to myself or the pack."
There was nothing but silence in the air as Anna thought it over. She may not have been the Alpha, but she didn't need to be to make the decisions when it came to her family's safety. Not that Fabian was going to hurt them.
"You promise?" Anna asked uncertainty painted all over her face.
"Anna, I promise," I reassured her. "I wouldn't lie to you. Fabian isn't going to hurt anyone. Isn't that right Fabian?" I asked, looking down at him.
He looked up at me, cocking his head to the side. He let out a quiet bark in response to my question before laying down on his stomach, placing his head on his paws.
"See," I laughed. "He's harmless. The most damage he can cause is accidentally breaking a vase when he trips over his own feet."
Anna quirked an eyebrow at my statement, causing me to retrace my steps.
"Which barely ever happens." I rush out before Anna can say anything else.
Anna chuckled, shaking her head. "Stand down, Finnegan. The wolf's 'harmless'."
Finnegan gave a slight nod before ushering Jaxson and Vicki inside to change. Fabian stared up at me as he made a small whining noise. I glanced down at him, giving him a small smile. James had moved towards the door, taking his wife's hand as he led both her and Quinn back inside.
"You okay, Cas?" Sage asked, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I turned to glare at him, shrugging his hand off my shoulder.
"You knew Fabian was here." I started. "You knew he was a werewolf, and you obviously knew he didn't belong to a pack because you would have smelled his pack on him if he had one."
                              "Cas, I–"
"You don't have to like him, Sage!" I shouted, cutting him off. "You just have to respect the fact that he is my friend and I'm the closest thing to a family he's got right now! So stop being jealous or whatever emotion you're being right now, and understand that I needed to talk to Fabian because three days ago I found out that there are a whole lot of people out there who either want to kill me or turn me. And I honestly wouldn't mind dying, Sage, if it meant that I wouldn't turn into something like you!"
I took several deep breaths before speaking again.
"No offence about the whole werewolf thing, Fabian." I apologized.
                              Fabian barked, wagging his tail.
"I'm guessing that was a 'none taken'," I smirked.
                              "Cassiel?"
                              "What, Sage?"
"It's not that I don't understand or respect anything you just said." He began. "It's that I'm cautious about who we let in our house. It's just like you said. As soon as other monsters start to find out that you're the most important part of that stupid prophecy, there'll be people coming after you. We just don't want to see you get hurt. We love you, Cassiel. And we don't want to lose you."
As Sage began to walk away I couldn't help but think of how wrong he was. Because the truth was, they'd already lost me. It was just a matter of how and when they figured it out. And whether or not I'd left by then.
