Sage's POV
The house was silent as I entered through the back door. The pack had left an hour ago to patrol the border, so I had free reign of the house. I was also hoping to talk to Cassiel, even if it was just for a second.
As I moved towards the stairs, I could hear my mother sniffling in the living room. I changed direction and made my way into the living room. Standing in the doorway, I watched my mother grab a couple tissues and blow her nose. Her face was red and blotchy, her eyes bloodshot and her carrot coloured hair was tangled and messy.
"Mum?" I said softly. "You alright?"
She jumped slightly when I spoke; I had obviously startled her. She tried and failed to wipe away any evidence that she had been crying. It didn't help that the tears refused to hold back.
"I'm fine, sweetheart." She choked out, her voice hoarse. "Your father and I had a rather unpleasant conversation, is all."
"What about?" I questioned.
She glanced up at me, hesitation etched all over her face. She wasn't sure if she should tell me or not. I'm not sure if I wanted to know.
"About Cassiel." She answered. "He's left."
"Left? What do you mean he's left?" I exclaimed.
My father entered the room just as my mother had gone to open her mouth to explain further.
"I see you've told him." He said coldly.
My body tensed. In my whole eighteen years of life, my dad had never once spoken to my mother so harshly. I turned to my mum and I watched as her face crumpled and the tears returned, ugly sobs escaping her throat as she cried into her hands.
"Dad?" I questioned. "What's going on?"
"Cassiel had the dream we'd been waiting for last night and your mother let him leave on his own." He growled out. "He's human for fuck's sake, Anna. He's not going to last two seconds on his own."
My mother suddenly stopped crying and looked up at my father. Her expression was cold and hard and her eyes voiced every ounce of anger that was growing inside of her. She slowly stood up from the sofa and she snapped.
"Do you honestly believe I wanted him to leave? Especially on his own!" She screamed at him. "I've already made my peace with the fact that I will never see Dayna again and if you think for one second that I want to lose any more of my children, then you, James Hart, know fuck all about me! I've loved Cassiel as if he were my own son from the moment I saw him and it killed me to watch him leave!"
She went quiet for a moment, daring my father to speak. He said nothing, so she continued.
"I didn't want him to leave on his own," She explained quietly. "But he wants to do this by himself. It's his real family and we have no business interfering. I would want the same thing if it were me."
My father's expression softened slightly. An uneasy silence filled the room before I decided to speak up.
"Who'd he dream about?" I questioned.
"Michael." My mum croaked.
"Don't even think about going after him, Sage." My father said firmly. "I may be upset with your mother but I do agree with her on one thing. I'm done losing my children."
"But you haven't lost Cas!" I retorted. "There's no way he could have gone far! Not unless he took a car or something! Does he even know where he's going?"
"He didn't say, but I don't believe he would have left if he didn't know." My mum replied gently.
She shuffled towards me and cupped my face in her small, soft hands.
"Promise me you won't go looking for him." She whispered.
My eyes shifted to the floor, unable to look at her. Her eyes flashed a golden yellow forcing me to look her in the eyes.
"Promise me, Sage." She said firmly. "Please."
"I promise."
My mother smiled at me, pressing a soft, chaste kiss to my forehead. She took a step back, her hands dropping gently to my shoulders.
"Thank you," She said softly.
My heart squeezed in my chest as I felt a niggle of guilt edge its way into my mind. I would try to find Cassiel, I couldn't not go after him.
"You guys want anything to eat?" I asked. "I'm starving."
"No, honey." My mum smiled. "I'm gonna head upstairs and take a shower."
She quickly turned to my father and glared at him.
"And don't even think of following me." She growled. "You're sleeping on the couch."
"What for?" He snapped.
My mother raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow at him before answering.
"For speaking to me like I'm the most ignorant old bitch on the planet." She replied bluntly.
My father's jaw dropped as I tried not to grin. My mother held her head high as she walked from the room, not sparing him a second glance. He looked at me as I continued to struggle to contain my laughter.
"Don't even think about laughing." He dared, pointing a finger at me. "Or I'll revoke you're car privileges."
"If you do that, Mum will just give me the keys to your Porsche and tell me to have a dangerous amount of fun in it." I laughed. "Just like she let Vicki do in Uncle Ryan's Mustang, when he commented on Mum's choice in clothing."
"He did have that coming, didn't he?"
"He basically called her a hooker, Dad."
"I should have kicked his ass for that."
"Well, you weren't home. But Vicki's amazing driving skills were."
"True."
