"Are you guys ready? I'm starving!" I called out, holding the door. Jake slipped behind me, resting his hands on my hips. His thumbs went in lazy circles and I giggled into his chest. I had this odd feeling in my tummy and tried to shake it off, only succeeding in making me more aware of it.
The rest of the crew came out mumbling things like "Get a room," and "Shut the Hell up, hoe." That last one was from Ally. Gotta love her, huh? They chatted aimlessly in the elevator, not picking up on the odd feeling I was getting at all, but Jake picked up on my mood and turned to me.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I just have this odd feeling in my tummy. You know when you think something isn't right and you just can't shake the feeling? Well, it's like that, but it hurts like a bitch." I groaned as the doors opened and we made our way out, my heels making click sounds on the beige tile floor.
"Well maybe you're just hungry." He said, trying to keep the concern out of his voice. I gave him a small smile and kept walking. The breeze outside caught me off guard. I listened to the sounds outside and slowed to a halt, the group following after me. There wasn't a sound going on.
Not a leaf out of place.
Not a single cricket.
Not even a goddamned squirrel.
There were no lights on and with my terrible eyesight, I almost couldn't see anything- but two beams of light caught my attention. It was Lilly's limo, pulled out in an awkward position. Beside it, were seven, shady figures. I held my hand up to tell my friends to wait there and I kept walking. As I got close, I saw what the figures were.
They were bodies.
I tried to quicken my pace, but it was like lifting lead legs. I spotted a familiar blonde head and broke into a sprint. My heels protested, but I ran anyway, running with more grace than I ever have. I had only ran a step when I called back to my friends.
"Call 911! Call them now!" I yelled in fits of tears. Ignoring the bodies of the other men, I ran to my blonde friend's body. She had been shot in the stomach- an excruciating place to get shot and a guarantee of death. She was still slightly warm and blood trickled out of her mouth. She looked up at the starless sky with blank, blue eyes and tear streaked cheeks.
"Lilly! Lilly, wake up! Lilly, please baby girl, wake up." When nothing happened, I just cradled her in my lap, sobbing. I kissed her cheek, my lower lip trembling along with the rest of me. I didn't bother to look at my friends, knowing they were frozen in the same shock I was going to be, but couldn't be in. Not when Lilly needed my help.
She still needed my help. I could feel that feeling in my stomach go away as she did, growing colder.
"It's okay, Lilly. I'm here now, girlie. I won't leave you." I picked her lifeless body up to me, straining my muscles. I could hear the ambulance and sirens grow closer as I held her there, weeping. I wasn't here fast enough. This was all my fault. I should have made her go back to her father's house. She would have been safe then.
This was all my fault.
Lilly's death, was my fault.
