Chapter 35- Young Justice School for Sidekicks
"Ready. Go!" Black Canary instructed. Not even a second later, the pairs of teens ran for each other ready to attack. Half of the room was on the offensive, kicking, punching and lunging at their opponents. The other half of the room was dodging and blocking the blows, attempting to get a good hit here and there. Halfway through they switched so the attackers were now defensive and the defensive fighters now attacking.
The teens in the room, regardless of their powers or special abilities, relied on this fists to fight. They were taught to hold their own against people twice their size, because there can be a time where they won't have their powers to fall back on. It was one of the first skills they were taught upon admittance to the very prestigious school.
This was their warm up, a 5 minute sparring session focusing on attacking and protecting themselves. The class only got more difficult from there, but what else would you expect for a school dedicated to training sidekicks. A whole school of potential sidekicks to fight along side heroes of the Justice League. The wait list was enormous.
Villains were getting more devious and sophisticated, so the League set up a school to mentor young heroes and take them under their wing until they could go solo. It was the opportunity of a lifetime to fight along side any member of the League and give their lives to fighting crime.
Black Canary was the perfect choice to teach the combat training class. She was one of the best martial arts fighters in the League. She was trained by heavy weight champion Ted Grant, Wildcat. She was also a therapist for any student who needed someone to confide in, or who had experienced a traumatic event.
"Time's up." The fighting halted instantly. "It's time for our tournament that you've been waiting for all week. Pair up with someone and we'll start the brackets. We should get to the finals by the end of class, where the leading person gets to fight me. The winner automatically gets placed in the advanced combat training class, with Batman."
Everyone knew Batman would choose his best fighter to take on as his sidekick, and there were plenty who wanted to take the mantle.
"Begin!"
The first fight was between Artemis and Wally. Both were rivals with opposite personalities and often butted heads. They were looking forward to having the opportunity of attacking each other without getting into trouble for hurting one another.
"Ready to go down Arty?" He teased.
"Funny, I was just about to ask you the same thing." She retorted back quickly. She didn't give him any time to respond and went straight for a jab to his right. He was too slow to move out of the way and grunted with the blow.
"That's it." He retaliated with a roundhouse kick followed by a quick succession of punches to her abdomen. And for the next couple of minutes, it was a series of blurs of punches and kicks between them. Both of them were determined to win over the other, but in the end it was Artemis who claimed the victory.
She played possum by staying on the ground for a second and groaning so Wally would get distracted by gloating. The she kicked his feet out from under him and pinned him down so he couldn't move.
"And that's how it's done." She smirked at him. He scowled in response.
"Artemis you move onto the next round along with Connor, Kaldur, Zatanna, Richard, and Megan."
Connor beat Kara in his fight, Kaldur triumphing over Raven, Zee prevailing against Raquel, Dick winning against Barbra and Megan emerging victorious against Donna.
