Spitfire One-Shots Chapter 32- Independence Day

Independence Day, or the Fourth of July is a cause for celebration in America. Most people celebrate with a barbecue or going to the beach and watching the fireworks. That was not the case for the young covert ops team working with the Justice League.

The team was assigned a simple mission to follow the rogues in Central City. All they needed to do was see who they were working for by tailing them for a few hours in the bioship. Things were going well, and they all thought they would make it back home at a reasonable time.

That was until they realized the Rogues were working with Deathstroke, who recognized the bioship in camouflage. And so a fight began.

"And on our 3 year anniversary, so nice of you to remember Deathstroke." Wally said teasingly, running with an inexplicable speed.

It was three years since Wally, Kaldur and Robin invaded Cadmus and saved Connor, thus founding the team.

"How's Cadmus doing Slade?" Wally kept going, using his super speed to hit the assassin anywhere he could. Deathstroke growled and grabbed Kid Flash in just the right moment as he was running and threw him over his shoulder, hard.

Wally fell on his back and groaned.

"Are you regretting provoking him now?" Artemis asked her boyfriend as she stood beside him and shot her arrows at Deathstroke. She was providing cover for her and Wally, while trying to distract him long enough so Connor could get in a few powerful hits.

"Not in the slightest." He responded with a smirk.

This is not the time to flirt, Robin said through the mind link Miss Martian established.

By this point, the Rogues had long split off, the team wasn't too worried there would get them soon enough. The priority of the mission shifted to taking down Deathstroke. He was a contract assassin, which pegged the question of who hired him.

Zatanna, Rocket and Miss Martian, go after the Rogues! Aqualad ordered in the mind ink.

The Rogues looked like they were planning some type of heist at a metal factory. Their best guess what they there were hired to steal something for Slade to use in an assassination. It could be used to forge some type of weapon.

They all had a strong suspicion it was the Light who hired Deathstroke. It was always the Light. It was ironic that after three years since starting the team, they were right back where they started, trying to take down the Light and their allies.

"I've had enough of your games children. It's time to end this." Their adversary raised his sword and cut down Artemis' arrows headed straight towards him. He caught Connor as he lunged and threw him at Kaldur.

Robin threw one of his explosive birdarangs, and while Slade was distracted, Artemis landed a tracer arrow on his back. Deathstroke threw the explosive towards the team effectively knocking them all to the ground.

By the time they all came back up groaning, he was gone.

"He still has the tracer on him." Artemis announced.

"Good, now let's rendezvous at the cave. Did you get that Miss Martian?"

"Copy that Aqualad. Our eta is two minutes." She replied.

They arrived at the Mt. Justice with enough time to spend the rest of the night at the beach. Megan brought all the supplies to have a small cookout, mainly just desserts. Everyone else just dragged their sore bodies to the beach to soak in the rest of their night.

Robin and Connor got started on making a small fire, Artemis helped Kaldur set up some tents and Wally was trying to sneakily open a bag of marshmallows without anyone noticing. Megan, Zatanna and Raquel were arranging the drinks in the coolers while chatting.

"Wally, you better make sure you save some for me or I'm going to kill you!" Artemis told him looking away for a second to secure the tent.

Kid Flash slowly put the bag away, but not before sneaking one last one for himself.

"So how about some campfire songs?" He asked the group once the sat around in a circle around the fire. They all stared at him blankly. "So I'm taking that as a no. It's your loss really, I knew some really good ones." He mumbled out the ending of his sentence.

Artemis just patted his arm comfortingly.

"Now would actually be a good time for s'mores Megan." She told the Martian who nodded in agreement. They passed out the marshmallows to everyone, and Zatanna performed a spell to place them on sticks.

"Is this going to become a yearly tradition?" Raquel asked to no one in particular.

"Fighting the Rogues or the bonfire?" Wally replied just as bluntly.

"The bonfire. Why would I even think about the other one? I think it's fun doing these group activities together. It's nice to sit back and relax after a hard day of work with friends."

"We should definitely make this an annual thing!" Zatanna chimed in taking a bit of her s'more. This was exactly what they needed to boost up their spirits after a long day of fighting. The thing with being a superhero is that there is always going to be another battle, always another person to save, and a world to protect. It's all part of the job and they all knew what they signed up for.

"A tradition to go with the anniversary of the start of the team, and with food, count me in." Wally said eating his tenth s'more.

"Can you guys believe it's been three years since we saved Connor from Cadmus?" Robin asked in disbelief. Three years have come and gone quickly. Time sure flies when you're fighting crime.

The rest of the group quickly immersed themselves in a conversation about the past three years, all the ups and downs. The fights, the highlights, the defeats, the improvements.

Wally, Kaldur and Dick and strayed to the side. They walked in a group together to get Wally another pack of marshmallows and crackers for himself. There was no need for all of them to accompany him, but Robin had something he wanted to discuss with them.

"I've been thinking." The boy wonder started.

"That's never a good sign." Wally quickly retorted, ripping into the bag of crackers. Robin gave him a look that made him shut up.

"It's been three years since we started the team. The Light is getting quicker and faster, and it's getting harder to keep up with them."

"What do you suggest we do?" Kaldur asked him.

"I want to add more members to the team. What do you say?" He asked bluntly.

The speedster and Atlantian looked at each other. "We're in."

A week later and the entire team sat in costume around a conference table at Mt. Justice. A thick stack of files sat in front of each of them, they contained the future members of their covert operations, their future teammates.

"Shall we begin?" Robin asked. "This is Cassandra Sandsmark, otherwise known as Wonder Girl..."

A/N: I have to admit this was a very crappy chapter. I had a semi-detailed outline for this chapter but for some reason it didn't save as a draft on Wattpad. So I had to write it all again, and everything got jumbled, so if things don't transition well I apologize. It's also shortened because I've had too much school work to juggle.

The bottom line is that life is hard.

In lighter news, Justice League is out in theaters! I actually saw it yesterday because I got advanced tickets. I'm not going to spoil anything, all I'm going to say is that I loved it and recommend that you watch it! My only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer.

I don't want to go off into a tangent but they cut a lot stuff out to make the movie like 2 hours. I want the original Zack Snyder cut! But that doesn't mean I wasn't amazed and satisfied with the one I saw.

If you do watch it, stay for the credits if you know what I mean ;)
