Chapter 36- Justice Babies
It was noisy, how could it not be with a room full of young children. Today the Justice League was having a picnic, at the Hall of Justice for security reasons of course. It wasn't take your child to work day, but a reasonable facsimile thereof.
The members of the League brought their children, family and loved ones. It was a special treat to commemorate the completion of the Watchtower, but only the adults were privy to that knowledge. The children were just happy to have more people to play with. And boy did their excitement show.
"Wally stop running around and help me." His uncle Barry asked sighing. It has only been 5 minutes and the toddler was already having the time of his life running around in circles.
Barry decided it was pointless in trying to distract the little kid, and went to put the food they brought on the table. The picnic was more of a potluck, and took place in the back of the large building in the garden. Being up front was too risky, everyone was going to forgo the costumes and secret identities for a day. The members of the league all knew each other's anyway.
"Is that your nephew?" Hal asked Barry as the speedster placed a large dish of lasagna on the table practically overflowing with food.
"Yup, that's Wally, right next to Iris. He's a handful but I love him." He pointed to his overactive nephew playing with his wife. "Who'd you bring?" Barry asked the Green Lantern, stealing a few cookies for himself.
"Just Carol." Hal said nodding in the direction of his long-time girlfriend mingling with Dinah.Barry could faintly make out the purple Star Sapphire ring on her finger.
"Any plans on proposing soon? I can give you a few tips."
"Thanks, but we are both happy with where we are now."
"Ah, I see."
"Uncle Barry!" Wally shouted running up to his uncle's legs. He still had some trouble pronouncing the letter "R". Barry scooped him up in his arms, tossing him up in the air and then catching him. Wally squealed, overwhelming with joy.
"Are you being a good boy?" He asked the small red head who nodded instantly.
"Now go off and play with your friends." He sent the little boy down who immediately ran off, happy to have more people to play with.
Elsewhere, Bruce was setting down a blanket for his adoptive son to sit in. Alfred was placing the whole feast he made onto the table, taking up about half of the food there. "Do you remember the rules Dick?" The caped crusader asked the blue eyed toddler.
"Yes Bruce." Dick began to sway. "Can I go play now."
"Have fun." He kissed the top of his head. "Be safe!" He called out after his son was already running towards Wally.
Roy and Jade were overlooking the younger children as they were some of the oldest. However, they were more into spending time each other than keeping a watchful eye on the little ones.
Just a few feet away from them Kaldur was conjuring small images using his magic, taking turns in showcasing his magic with Zatanna. Connor and Megan were paying with Krypto and imitating him in trying to catch his tail. And the most interesting instance was Artemis and Wally.
Wally kept pulling on her ponytail, and running away the second she would turn her head. This happened several times before her patience wore out. So the blonde child glared, or so she thought, it ended up more like a pout anyway with her chubby cheeks.
Artemis took her scrunchie holding up her hair and aimed it like a slingshot directed at Wally's head. Even at a young age her aim was impeccable. It hit him in the head, and being the dramatic child that he was, he went down immediately.
"Arty!" He shouted with his face still pressed on the ground. He used his chubby littlefists to bring himself up and pouted at the smirking blonde girl.
He ran at her like he had super speed and pushed her down, laughing as she fell. Artemis began crying loudly, as she scraped her knee. She clutched onto it in pain. Wally, hearing her distress felt guilty and ran back.
"Are you ok?" He asked, pronouncing his r's as w's. Artemis shook her head and held onto her knee tighter.
"Wait." Wally told her before springing off to the refreshment table. He grabbed a couple of cookies and ran right back to Artemis who had stopped crying and was watching him curiously.
"Here." He handed her a chocolate chip cookie, one of his favorites. Wally sat next to Artemis who accepted the treat, and they both munched on their snack quietly.
Not too far, Roy and Jade were watching the strange interactions between the children. "How much do you want to bet that they end up together when they're older?" Roy asking turning to face Jade.
"You're on." She challenged him, and they shook on it. "Now we have to fix her leg before my mom finds out and kills me."
At the same time, Bruce, Diana and Clark were all watching the entire picnic unfold. "Look at what we created, a new generation of crime-fighting heroes."
"The Justice Babies."
A/N: Happy Valentine's Day! Remember that there is always someone who loves you :)
This is a very short chapter, but I posted a long one last year so I guess that evens out. Fun fact, I actually got the idea for this chapter from a dream I had. I must have thought about YJ before I went to sleep and when I woke up this little nugget of an idea was born. Obvious it doesn't follow the correct timeline, and things are out of place, but just bear with me for this chapter.
Now, aren't the pictures the cutest? I thought this was a nice, fluffy chapter perfect from distracting you from the over-stimulus of hearts.
Don't forget to vote, comment and share this story! BTW, on the day after Valentine's Day all the chocolate goes on sale. You'll thank me later ;)
