"You what?!" Luke bellowed. I cringed and he calmed a little. "I-I just can't believe you would do that, Chance. You do remember what he did, don't you?"
I sigh. "That was a year ago. He's changed since then."
He scoffed. "Ha-ha. Yeah, right. He's 'changed.'"
I narrow my eyebrows. "Excuse me? What's that supposed to mean?"
"I'm just saying that he's going to put on a show for a short while and then he's just going to flat out hurt you." Luke's voice started to rise.
"No, he's not. He promised he wasn't like that anymore." I say through gritted teeth.
Luke laughed, but it was humorless. "Really? He promised? Oh wow. Trust me, I know guys like that. They 'promise' stuff and then go back on it when they get what they want."
I completely had it. "Like that?!" I screech. "What do you have against him, huh? If you really were my friend, you'd be happy for me!"
"Chance," he sighed, looking at the ground. Luke finally looked up and met my eyes with a look of pure sadness. "I just thought you were better than that." He didn't even bother to mask the hurt in his voice.
I just stare at him before barely whispering, "What?"
"You need someone who actually cares about you. Someone who won't purposely hurt you and put you down, but will dedicate every single day to showing and proving how much they love you." By the end of his little spiel, Luke's face was mere inches from mine. I could feel his hot breath on my face and he slowly leaned and caught my lips.
Luke and I were kissing. My first kiss. And it was with my best friend.
Luke pulled away and looked at me square in the eye. "I know that was your first kiss. I practically know everything about you. A few years ago, I promised I would be the first one to kiss you. And if you let me, I'll be the first one to not break your heart."
All I did was nod and attach our lips back together.
