Andral had brought you to the garden doors, but quickly left so that he and Misandra could do their work.
After goodbyes, you opened the doors. You were met with only disappointment at what you saw. Square hedges, chopped grass, The large trees looked as though they were dying. No flowers, no vibrant colors. Even the green seemed dull and barely alive.
You sighed to yourself. This would be a challenge, but one you were excited to face. You closed the doors behind you and stepped into the grass. Its cut edges stabbed into your ankles.
There was a man trimming a bush to the left of you. "Excuse me!" You call out politely as you approach the elderly man. He was startled at first but soon smiled at you. "Hello young lady, is there anything I can do for you?" He asked, his deep voice shaking, showing his age.
"Possibly. Are you the gardener?" You ask, keeping your voice soft in the quiet garden.
He nods "Indeed I am. Or at least, I usually am. Sometimes I just can't get anything done with my hip the way it is." the old man chuckles. "But yes, I am"
You smile warmly to him. "I've been put in charge of readying the garden for the flower festival." You hold your hands in front of you and do a small bow. "I hope that we get along well."Standing back up straight, you noticed a bit of surprise on his face. Though it didn't last long, as he let out a light hearted chuckle.
"You aren't from here, are you Lass?" He asked as he sets down his sheers.
"No, I'm not." You smile wearily. "Is it so obvious?"
Wiping his brow, he gives you a reassuring smile. "It is, but I'd say that's good. People nowadays aren't so polite, always demanding and belittling. But you seem like a sweet young girl." He says, turning and gesturing for you to follow him.
You do."You see, this garden just isn't what it used to be. When I was younger, I never went a day without minding it. But now that my body fails me, I can only come in when it allows. Its far easier to keep it simple. And while that may be better for my hips." He stops by a small pond. Mucky and without life.
"Its only caused this place to deteriorate." He looks at the pond and sighs. "I wish I could fix this place up, get it back to its old self before your festival. But I'm afraid that not much can be done in such a short amount of time." He says solemnly. You look over the pond, and the wilted green. And something stirs in you.
"No."
He turns to you curiously. "What was that?"
"No. I'll help you fix it. We'll make it on time!" A smile that you just can't hold back appears on your face.
The old man chuckles. "I'm not sure if that's possible. But with spirit like that, perhaps it'll be back in shape by the next one."You talk with the old man, whose name is Hercules, for a bit longer about where to go to get supplies before he had to leave.
You say goodbye and turn back to the garden.
This was going to be hard, but you were willing.Finding everything you needed and setting aside, you even got money from Andral to buy some plants and seeds.
The only big problem was that you didn't know where to buy them from."Oh good, (Y/N). I thought I'd find you here." Says a voice behind you. It was the queen.
You quickly took a bow to show respect. But she just giggled sweetly and motioned for you to straighten up.
"No need for that, love." her smile was warm and gentle. "I chose to drop by and see how you were settling in. though I see you've been keeping yourself busy." She directed her gaze to the mountain of gardening equipment you had gathered.
You rubbed the back of your neck and glanced away from her. "I just wanted to help." You say, even if you were slightly forced, you enjoyed gardening enough to just go along with it."You're so sweet (Y/N)~" Her hand gently rests on your back as she speaks. "It's exciting to think that this place could be brought back to its former glory." She says dreamily as the two of you began walking further into the garden, her hand on your back softly pushing you forward.
"I look forward to putting my all into it, your grace." A determined smile appears on your face. The queen makes a turn around some hedges, bringing you with her. "And I do so appreciate you helping my little Misandra with the preparations." She directed her smile to you, placing her hand on her cheek. You were about to tell her that you didn't mind, but she continued.
"However.." She muttered, glancing back in the direction the two of you came from before turning back to you. She removed her hand from your back and up to your chin, gently tilting your face up to look at hers.
"Don't use it as an excuse to neglect my baby boy." Her sweet tone seemed to sour in your ears now.
Instinctively you take a step back, only to be met with the hedges against your back and the queen encroaching even closer.
"He gets lonely, you see."
She leans in beside your ear and whispers softly, bitterly Into it.
"He might need a cute little pet to play with~"
You could feel the trimmed branches of the shrubbery behind you stabing into your back as you push further into them, as if trying to escape through them. She quickly pulls her face away from yours, though her proximity to you doesn't change. "Though I suppose pets need attention too, don't they?" She steps back, hand clasped around your wrist.
"Attention, affection, but they also need to be trained" She yanks your arm, bringing you down to your knees. "So that they don't become spoiled." Your arm is then tugged back up, keeping your knees just barely off the ground.
"I had such hope for you when you first arrived (Y/N). So polite, so loving." She takes your chin in her hand, this time with a firmer grip.
"But now I'm told that you rejected him, ignored him?!" Her sudden aggression left you frozen. "I won't be allowing any of that in my home." She seemed to growl her words as she neared you again.
"Is that clear, witch?"
You nod your head, too intimidated to speak.Suddenly you fall back to the ground.
"Good girl."
You touch your bruised wrist carefully as the queen continues. "You should go see him soon. He's been pouting all day."
Patting off your dress as you stand up, you mumble "Yes, your grace."
Her sweet smile returns, as if she had done nothing. She places her hand on your back, making you flinch. She adds light pressure and begins to walk again, Heading towards the door with you."I do hope you'll remember this little conversation from now on, love. I truly would hate to repeat it in the future." She smiled warmly to your shriveling form.
"Of course" You mumble.
"He's a sensitive boy, you know? He's always been his mothers son more then his fathers." She seemed very proud as she spoke. "His interests, Looks, talents- he's my son through and through." She stops and turns to you as you reach the door. "So I'm sure you can see why I'm so protective of him." You nod along as she opens the door.
"Now run along and find him, sweety. He'll be happy to see you." She said before forcefully shoving you through the door, almost knocking you off your feet.
