"Come on, just a little further. Please don't break down, please, please, please." I begged aloud to my car. My baby has made it this far, she can't stall out now. I finally found a small gas station called the DX, so I pulled in, and started towards the door. A boy about 14 or 15 opened the door for me, which was nice of him. Usually teenagers that age are jerks, but he seemed like a well mannered kid.
"Welcome to the DX station, how can I help you?" My heart stopped as I looked at the guy behind the counter. He was handsome- no, gorgeous. He had movie star looks and brown hair combed back, slightly greasy. His deep blue eyes looked like the ocean, and he had heck of a smile. It was a little crocked, but adorable.
"Um, yeah I need my car filled up." I managed to say.
"Okay, anything else?" He asked, stepping from behind the counter.
I shook my head. "Nope, that's all."
I followed him outside and showed him to my blue mustang. As he filled up my car he looked over and asked, "You new in town?"
"Yes," I answer shyly. "I just moved here from Ohio."
"Ohio? Wow that's pretty far. What did you move here for?"
"There is a good college not too far away." I explained. "It's a performing arts school. I got a free scholarship there."
He looked pretty impressed. "Wow, that's cool. Do you act?"
"Yeah, but I mostly dance. I have been dancing since I was 5 years old." I told him proudly. Dance is the only thing I really have going for me, so I'm always happy to tell people.
"You a ballerina or something?" He jokes and flashed me an award winning smile.
I laughed and ran my fingers through my hair. "Yeah actually, and I also do tap, jazz, and pointe."
"Gosh, sounds like you got a lot going for you, I hope everything works out in your favor." He finished pumping gas and wiped the sweat off his forehead. I sure hope it's not hot like this all the time. Say, I haven't caught your name yet. What is it?"
"I'm Jessica Jones." I said, introducing myself.
"I'm Sodapop Curtis. Nice to meet you." He said and held out out his hand. Attractive and a gentleman. Too bad someone like him probably has a girlfriend.
"That's an interesting name, I like it." I told him as we shook hands.
"Thanks, I got a kid brother Ponyboy, and my older brothers name is Darrel." I opened up my purse and paid him for the gas. "Oh hey, there's Ponyboy over there. You can meet him if you'd like."
He calls Ponyboy over, who's standing by the entrance of the store, and I realize it is the kid that held the door open for me. Now it was easy to tell they were brothers; they're both good looking and nice. Ponyboy has bown hair slicked back, and he has dreamy brown eyes where Soda's is blue.
"Hey Pony, this is Jessica. She came all the way from Ohio to go to that tuff performing arts school across town." He announces with a goofy grin on his face.
Ponyboy smiles and he shakes my hand. "Nice to meet you." He then looked across the street and his smile stops immediately. "Looks like them Socs are on our turf again. What do you think they want?"
Sodapop sighs, "Probably want to cause trouble again. Can't they find something better to do?" He pops the collar up on his light blue DX shirt. "Hey, stand close to me incase they try to start something okay?"
"Um sure, okay." I say worriedly. I've heard about Socs and Greasers before, but those social classes don't really exist where I'm from. I always thought the greasers were the bad ones, but my cousin told me some stories about the city and I realized that both sides have their own issues. Plus, someone like Ponyboy or Sodapop couldn't be harmful.
Sure enough, the Socs stepped out of their mustang and the one that was driving gave us a mean look. Four more came out and surrounded us until we were practically leaning up against my car.
"What could you possibly want now Bob?" Soda glares. "You almost got me fired last week!"
"Just came to give you a waning." Bob shoots back.
"A warning?" Pony questions.
He scoffs at Ponyboy. "Yeah a warning. We wanna let you know that we're kicking your ass in the next rumble."
"Okay, that's great Bob. Say, Randy how's your nose? Hope I didn't hit you too hard last Saturday." Soda said sarcastically.
"You broke my damn nose! What do you think?" A soc with a big white bandage on his nose yelled. A silence fills the area and suddenly, all eyes fall on me. I guess they were bound to notice me, but I was hoping I could somehow get out of here.
"Who's the broad?" Bob asked as he took a step towards me.
"It's our friend, Jess." Pony announced. I'm surprised by his comment because I've only known them for a good five minutes.
Bob took a long look at me and put his arm around my waste. "Why don't you come for a ride, we can show you the classy side of town." His suggestive eyes tell me he has another idea than just showing me around Tulsa.
"Um no thanks. I need to get to my apartment." I said as I lifted his arm off of me.
That probably wasn't a good move because Bob's face fills with rage. "Hey babe, we don't take no for an answer. Now get in the car or I'll put you in myself."
I stared at Soda and Ponyboy in shock. Before I thought it through, I kicked him in his lower region and yelled "Get in!" to Ponyboy and Soda. I threw open my car door and hoped in while Pony got in the back, and Sodapop did some fancy slide across the hood of my car and jumped in the passengers seat. I hurried up and drove away, and didn't stop until I was sure that we lost them.
"Well that was close." I mumbled while finally putting my seatbelt on. So far, I'm not too sure how I feel about Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"I'm so sorry that happened. Do you know where your apartment is? We can get out and walk home if you want." Sodapop replied quickly.
I chuckled, "I know where it is, but I'm not gonna let you walk home. That would be rude."
"Really? Thanks you're pretty cool Jess. Just turn up this road here and our's is the first house on the left. You can meet the rest of the gang if they're there."
"Wow, I've been in town for an hour and I'm already making friends." I laughed. Usually I'm really shy and I take a while to open up to others, but Sodapop and Ponyboy make me feel like we've been friends forever. Hopefully the rest of the gang is like that.
