Dally and I must’ve fallen asleep on the couch because when I finally woke up it was eight in the morning.

"Shit." I mutter as Dally slowly starts waking up.

"What?" He asks in a daze.

"I have an hour to get my ass over to school! It takes at least a half hour to get there and I don’t have anything ready!" I run into my room looking for my dance bag. I finally find it and then start looking for something to wear. I settle on a purple leotard with a black skirt.

"Um Dally, you need to get out so I can change." I say as he walks in.

Dally rolls his eyes and laughs. "Come on babe, we’re together now. I think its okay to-"

"No it’s not okay." I interrupt him.

"Are you seri-" He begins.

"Yes."  I insist firmly.

"Fine, I’ll be in the living room." He gives up and walks away. Looking at the clock I realize I have just enough time to brush my teeth and grab something to eat. I decide on a cereal bar and grab an apple and pre made PB& J sandwich for lunch.

"Dal, you drive right?" I begin as I walk into the living room.

"Yeah, I got my license, I just chose not to drive." He defends himself in his uncaring tough guy voice.

"I’m not asking for an explanation on why you don't babe. You can cut the act. I need you to drive me so I can put my hair up and eat."

"Alright but you’re gonna have to tell me where to go." He warns.

"That’s fine." I throw him the keys and run out to my car.

We pull up with ten minutes to spare, so I only have time to give him a quick kiss and then run inside. I told him he can use my car for the day but he better not get a scratch on it or he’s paying for it. I walk inside of the school and quickly begin stretching.

******************************

After school Dally comes to pick me up and we head over to the Curtis house. I haven’t seen them since we got back from the lake so I was a bit excited.

"JESS!" Sodapop yells as he runs over to the car. He gives me a big hug until I tell him I can’t breathe.

"Hey Jessie." Two Bit yells from the porch.

"Ugh, Two Bit you know I don’t like to be called that." I groan as I come over to hug him.

"I know." He smiles playfully. "Why you all sweaty?"

"Gee Two Bit, I don’t know. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was just dancing for almost eight hours! Where do you think I’ve been?" I ask him stupidly.

Before we could get in one of our famous debates, Darry and Ponyboy comes outside. "Hey Jess. How’s school been going?" Darry asks me.

"Fun, I hate my job though. Which reminds me, I got to be there at six." I complain.

"What’s wrong with work? You ain’t working at the Dingo aren’t you?" He asks concerned.

"Cause Bob and Randy started bothering her again." Dallas interrupts.

"Again?" Steve comes from out of nowhere basically and sits on a lawn chair.

"Yeah, the first day she got here Pony and I had to rescue her from them." Soda laughs as he grabs a coke out of a cooler.

"Oh yeah, now I remember." Steve nods.

Johnny comes over and tells me hi. I ask him how he is and he says, "Same old same old."

We all joke around for a bit until I have to leave for work. I give Dallas a quick kiss goodbye and then drive back to my apartment to get ready.

Work was alright, I guess. It wasn’t as busy as yesterday and there weren’t that many Socs, but it was still work. As I walked up to my apartment I noticed Johnny and Ponyboy sitting on the steps to the main door.

"Um hey guys. Is everything alright?" I ask cautiously.

"P-Ponyboy got in a fight with Darry and my folks are being the same as usual." Johnny mutters. He doesn’t even need to give details on what was going on with his parents. They just fight and beat him for no reason, that’s why Johnny is so jumpy I’ve figured out. Them Socs aren’t to kind to Johnny either.

"Why were you fighting with Darry?" I turn to Ponyboy. They have some issues, but not ever bad enough for Pony to leave.

"I burned dinner. Darry had to run to the store and told me to look after the chicken. But I started reading Gone With the Wind again and got so caught up in the book that I forgot. Then he started yelling because the chicken was expensive and then I started defending myself. After a bit I ran to the old lot we hang out in and found Johnny so we decided to come here to visit." He blurts out before a few tears run down his cheek.

"Ponyboy, don’t cry. What happened was an accident, Darry knows that. He was just frustrated and took it out on you. Why don’t you guys stay over for the night, if it’s alright with Darry and your parents." I offer while pulling Pony in for a hug. At first he’s reluctant but then wraps his arms around me. I give Johnny a hug too, trying to show him the kind of love he doesn’t get at home.

"Oh my parents don’t care." Johnny says. "You sure it ain’t too much trouble?"

"Nah, it’s okay. You guys ain’t crazy like Two Bit or Sodapop. Why don’t I call Darry for you Pony."

"Well okay. I guess I don’t want him to worry too much." Ponyboy mumbles. I bring them inside and tell them to make themselves at home. Johnny plops on the couch and Ponyboy wanders into the kitchen.

I grab my phone and dial Darry’s number. After three rings he finally answers. "Hello."

"Hey Darry, it’s me Jess. Ponyboy and Johnny came over and I told them they can stay the night if it’s alright with you. I know you and Pony had an argument today, and I didn’t want you to worry about him cause he ran off." I tell him.

Darry sighs. "As long as it’s not too much trouble then it’s okay."

"Alrighty, talk to you later."

"Hey Jess?" He asks.

"Yeah?"

"Thanks." Darry answers simply.

"No problem." I smile before hanging up.
