We'd gotten of the train an hour ago, and now we were sitting in a city bus. I sighed and grabbed my phone. I raised my eyebrows as I saw that Lauren had just texted me. Leaning against Austin, I read it.
Lauren: the guy next to me is sitting WAY too close.
I grinned and rolled my eyes before responding.
Me: can u move??
Lauren: NO! He's on the aisle seat.
Lauren: he keeps trying to read over my shoulder.
I looked up and saw Austin looking at my phone. Give it to me. He mouthed. I handed him my phone and peered over his shoulder as he replied.
Me: delete these texts and I'll send you a new message
We waited for a minute while Lauren deleted our conversation, and I cringed thinking about the billions of texts that were now gone. Finally, she looked up and nodded slightly.
Austin smirked and cracked his fingers before texting her.
Me: he'll be arriving home around 6:00. His car is a black SUV, and his fiancee won't be home until @ least 8:00
Me: the back door has a hard lock, if you jiggle it, it'll break easily. We can hide in the lounge and wait for him to sit on the couch.
Me: and fine! You can do the honors with the baseball bat.
I could barely hide my laughter and I pressed my face into his shoulder. After a minute, my phone vibrated and we looked at it.
Lauren: omg, he just moved seats!!! The look on his face though!!
Austin and I cracked up, not caring that people turned to look at us. I saw Sam take the seat next to Lauren and smile at her. I raised an eyebrow at Austin and he shook his head tsking. "Young love, I tell you?" he said sadly. I giggled and rolled my eyes as he continued. "Despicable, completely despicable."
25 minutes later, we came to a stop and hurried out of the bus. We walked quickly across the street and into a building. "Where are we?" I asked looking around. This was a hospital. "Wait, Sams why are we in a hospital?" I asked. He grinned. "The art show is on the 3rd floor, it's for cancer patients." as soon as he finished, I froze. Lauren and Sam didn't notice as they hurried into an elevator, but Austin put a hand on my shoulder. "Hey, are you okay with this?" he asked gently. I took a deep breath. "I guess... I don't know, it's hard being in hospitals right now," I explained. He nodded and leaded me into the next elevator. "I get it," he said softly. "But Drew wants you to this, okay? Do it for him," I nodded just as the doors opened, and we walked out. It was dark and I squinted trying to make out the shapes. "What's going-" I stopped when the lights flickered on and someone yelled "SURPRISE!" my eyes widened as I looked around and saw Mr. and Mrs. Roberts and Drew. he was smirking at me from his wheelchair, and I shook my head in disbelief. "I don't believe this," I whispered hurrying to him. He stood up and wrapped me into his familiar arms. Tears were streaming down my face and I shook my head against his chest. "I don't believe this," I said again. He laughed and kissed my head. "Hey baby girl," he whispered softly. "I've missed you so much." I closed my eyes and sighed happily. Finally, I pulled away and a nurse hurried Drew back to his room, telling us that we could come in after he was back in bed and hooked up. While we waited, I hugged Mrs. Roberts and she smiled at me. "It's so good to see you again Brooklyn," she said softly. I looked up at her and saw that her eyes were tired, and red. I had a million things I wanted to ask, but instead I forced a smile. "It's great to see you too Emily," I said. She laughed and patted my back one more time before letting me go. "Finally! You called me by my name." I couldn't help but giggle as she jumped up and down. Mr. Roberts chuckled and pulled me into him. "He's doing a lot better," he said softly. I wrinkled my nose and looked at him. "Drew," he added. "The doctors think that they might have it under control now." I closed my eyes and smiled a real smile. He hugged me again and I laid my head against his chest briefly as he continued. "And he might even be able to go home soon," he said. This time, it was me who squealed and jumped up and down. "I can't wait for him to come home," I whispered. "Because then, I'll finally be at home."
