When I was merely four years old, I peeked around a corner of the polished marble doorway that led into Mother's favorite room in the castle. I somehow managed to escape the eyes of the maids watching over me. If I recall back to those times correctly, it wasn't that difficult to flee because the maids were gossiping about a child, my age, beating grown men in a duel. I only saw it as an opportunity to sneak away.
Around the corner, Mother sat on her piano bench. Her golden hair was perfectly combed and her blue cape rested on the floor behind her. Her eyes were closed as she started to play a song I knew all too well. My lullaby.
I stood there watching her fingers gracefully dance across the keys. The music echoed throughout the room. When she played, it always seemed magical, like she wasn't the only one playing the song. It was as if there were spirits with her, enhancing the music further. After I closed my small eyes to take the music in, it all stopped."Zelda," said Mother in her sweet and calm voice.
I opened my eyes to see her head turned towards me. She smiled and patted the empty space on the bench next to her. Quickly I ran over, claiming the spot like someone else might steal it from me. From there we both played the song together. A moment I cherish.
Once our song was over, Father came in briskly. Back then, Father had dark hair and a shadow of facial hair. I used to rub my hands on his scruffy face, pondering why it felt so prickly compared to mine. One thing that never changed was the tension he carried on his shoulders and the crown that sat on his locks.I remember Mother wore casual apparel from time to time, but never Father. He was always on edge and getting down to business straight away. This time was no different.
"The Fortune Teller is here. She has grave news."
"Let me come," I pleaded, knowing Father would never say yes to such a request.
To my surprise, he actually made no question of it as he escorted us out of the room. We walked the halls, following Father's sure steps. I still had no clue how to get around the castle entirely by myself. Despite my hate of people watching over me, I knew then and now it was for the best, even if that was gossiping maids.
We reached the Cabinet Room where five chairs have been set up around Father's personal desk. Raising from one of the seats was Gerudo woman who was a bit on the short side for her race. A purple veil covered her mouth and nose but it didn't hide her beauty. In the other chair, taking her time to stand was another Gerudo woman, much taller than average. She looked fierce and dangerous, yet at the same time, she seemed similar to my mother. I placed trust in her instantly.
"Your Majesties," the taller one said, as the women both bowed to us respectfully.
"Urbosa," Mother acknowledged in return before turning her attention solely on the shorter Gerudo woman, "You must be the Fortune Teller. You say you have seen something that concerns the land of Hyrule?"
"Yes, but it might take some time to explain," the woman replied, suggesting that they should all be seated.
Mother and Father took the two seats behind the large desk while I took the vacant seat to the side of it by Urbosa. She flashed a grin my way, which I returned. I then stared at her long tanned legs and proceeded to gape at my feet that dangled in the air. Serious matters went on from there as the Fortune Teller told us what she recently saw in one of her dreams.
"The myths and legends aren't what they seem. I saw Calamity Ganon. It is on the brink of returning after 10,000 years. The ancient technology is somewhere in these lands as well. Where exactly, I hadn't the slightest inkling. But I saw flashes of the Zoras, the Gorons, the Rito, and us, the Gerudo."
"The four Divine Beasts!" I exclaimed, "There is one for all regions!"
Mother smiled, "I think she might be onto something, but please, was there anything else? Do we need to find the Divine Beasts to annihilate Ganon?"
The Fortune Teller gave a curt nod, "Yes. My only fear is, I do not know when it will come or if we will have time to find the Beasts before it does. The only words I received from this prophecy were this: 'The signs of a resurrection of Ganon are clear. And the power to oppose it lies dormant beneath the ground.' That we have already assumed are the Divine Beasts." Her eyes shifted over to me, "However, I do know this last piece, the Princess must obtain her sacred power and the sword that seals darkness must be awakened. If not . . . we are all doomed."
From then on, Mother and I trained more enough while everyone searched for the Divine Beasts. We were happy when we found them. I got the news from Father about them. I was immediately filled with joy, but at the same time, it only told me that what the Fortune Teller saw wasn't a sham. Ganon really was returning and I needed to earn the sacred power of the Goddess Hylia.
Mother prepared me for when I would have to pray at the Springs of Power, Courage, and eventually Wisdom. She believed that at one of them, I would hear the voices. I tried to hold firm to the words she spoke to me, but they have all grown faded over the years, especially when Mother left us.
Mother's death was hard for everyone in the kingdom. Father most of all. Being only six years of age at that time, many people thought I wouldn't understand what they meant when they told me Mother was gone, but I understood just fine.
This brings me to the final memory of her that I will never forget because it haunts me more than anything. Just before she died, Mother told me that I had to be brave as Hyrule's princess. That I had to listen carefully in order to gain the sacred power of the goddess. Something she had told me all through our six years together.
So, I did not cry, not even one tear. And when it was just Father and me, I didn't cry then either. If I was going to show her my love, I had to awaken the power within me. It was the only way. I could not let my kingdom down nor the whole world.
