A Gift for the Couple

I gasped, staring at the ring, "Sidon! Is that what I think it is?"

Sidon jumped. When he saw it was Link and me he relaxed. His hand closed around the ring and he laughed, a bit sheepish, which was a first.

"Yes, but I'm still not in the position to ask as of yet. Royal engagements are . . .  well, complicated. Yona and I have, at the very least, established our feelings."

Link gave him a thumbs-up while I clasped my hands together in front of my lips. "I'm so happy for you. I bet it will be a wonderful engagement story and a big party too."

That was exactly the reason I was happy with our quiet wedding, and I understood what Sidon meant about royal engagements. Another reason I preferred not to have a long engagement. According to Mother, she and Father were engaged for five years before they married. Both parents wanted to ensure the pair was prepared to rule the kingdom. Despite being engaged, Mother said they spent little time together outside of lessons.

I was certain if more people knew I was the princess, they would have wanted a lengthy engagement too and time to throw the biggest wedding Hyrule's ever seen. The preparations would be exhausting.

"Yes, I believe it will be," Sidon said before he extended to ring out, "Would you like to see it?"

This was a silly question because, of course, I would love to see the ring. I took the small piece of jewelry from his palm and closely examined it. It was shaped like the Zora Sapphire--three distinct dazzling blue jewels linked together. I knew that in the past the Zora used the sapphire as a wedding gift instead of armor.

"Wow, it's beautiful," I said with a smile, "Are you meeting up with her today?"

Sidon retrieved the ring. "Yes. We plan to spend a day at Lurelin Village, but I sent a team out to make sure that Lanayru Bay isn't covered with monsters."

"You're going to swim in the ocean to get there?" I questioned, knowing that Zoras favored freshwater as opposed to salt.

"Yes Highness, and along the way, we may even check out some islands."

Link stiffened, "You're not planning on going to Eventide Island, are you?"

Prince Sidon laughed, slapping Link's back, "Of course we are! I have never been there myself!"

Suddenly loud cries could be heard from around the corner. I glanced to see it was a group of girls, no doubt Sidon's fan club. It made me wonder how many times they've cried over the last few months. Poor girls. Though even if he had agreed to court one of them, the others would still be in tears.

While I was distracted, Link grabbed onto my hand, "Zelda, we need to go."

"Huh? What for?"

Before Link could explain Sidon hemmed. Link glanced at him, not sure what he did to cause such a reaction. We followed his gaze down to our hands.

"Link, where exactly have you been since we last met?" he asked.

He cleared his throat, "With Zelda?"

Sidon clamped a hand down on Link's shoulder, "Link, you are my best friend. You would tell me if you got engaged, right?"

At the same moment, Link and I cringed. It was a little more than engaged, but how did he know? Neither of us wore a ring. Regardless, Sidon beamed, and his teeth sparkled. He shook Link's hand furiously in congratulations.

"I am thrilled for the two of you!" he shouted, finally letting go of Link's hand.

Someone coughed behind us. We all turned to see a black Zora with a spear in his hand. He seemed like an extremely serious individual.
