Devika’s POV

We were enjoying the show to the maximum, when the announcer told that it was time for the best music video award. My palms started sweating again and I gulped, crossing my fingers. I turned to my right and saw Sanaya and Khushi in the same position.

“Allow me to invite Anu Malik and the ever gorgeous Priyanka Chopra on the stage to do the honours.” The announcer said and they walked on the stage

Priyanka was clad in a beautiful white gown. She leaned forward and said, “Can we peek at the nominations, please?” She had a beautiful American accent, despite being born in India.

A male voice boomed around the stadium, announcing the nominees for the award. He announced our song:

“Dooriyaan- Karan Johar, Imran Khan and Devika Malik, Vishal Dadlani, Monica Dogra”

This time, Anu Malik took the mike and said, “I’m glad this award goes to this song, because the actress shares my last name! Give it up for the team of ‘Dooriyaan’!” He shouted!

All of us stood up and hugged each other in joy. We all piled up on the stage and Karan thanked everyone and then gave the mike to me. My eyes widened at the unexpected gesture, but Karan motioned me to go on.

I leaned near the mike and said, “Good evening, again. This is so unexpected, oh my god! I was totally gutted when I won the first one and now another! I’d like to thank Karan, the entire cast and crew of ‘Dooriyaan’ and my girls over there! Thanks again!” and I was given the award from Priyanka Chopra!

I went back to my seat and was engulfed in two hugs by Sanaya and Khushi. I kissed both of their foreheads and sat down.

After a few more awards and performances, it was the time for Best Actress in a Leading Role award. Again, the nerves returned.

Amitabh Bachhan and Aishwarya Rai Bachhan were on the stage. To receive an award from them was like....Idk! It’d be too much to handle for li’l me..

Bachhan sir went near the mike and said in his deep voice, “Namashkaar deviyon aur sajjanon (Hello ladies and gentlemen)” The same way he hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati?

Aishwarya also leaned towards the mike and said in her posh accent, “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We’re here to announce the award for Best Actress in a leading role and the winner is...” She started off and opened her envelope. She showed it to Bachhan sir and announced, “It’s actually a tie...The best actress in a leading role....goes to...” She started again.

“Priyanka Chopra for Barfi...!” She shouted and the crowd erupted in applause and I joined them. I was on the edge of my seat to know who the second winner was and Bachhan sir took the mike and continued, “And, the award also goes to Devika Malik from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”

My eyes widened and I screamed, but no voice came out. I stood up and brought Khushi and Sanaya with me on to the stage. Priyanka received the award from the both of them and she made her speech and hugged me. We congratulated each other and it was my turn.

I went near the mike and I couldn’t control myself. I became breathless and spoke, “Uhm...I am so shocked! Honestly...” I breathed through the mike and the crowd Aishwarya started clapping, encouraging me to go on. I shot her a look of thanks and continued.

“I’m gonna make this super short...Thanks to Ayan, my director, Karan, my producer, Ranbir, Kalki and Adi, for being the wonderful co actors that they were, the entire crew of Yeh Jawaani...” I said. I motioned Sanaya and Khushi to come near me and I hugged them close on either side and said, “Nothing would’ve been possible without the support of these two angels in my life...I was lazy and was happy with the teacher’s job that I had, but they pushed me forward....Thanks girls...”

“Enjoy the evening, ladies and gentlemen...” I said and walked backstage to change into my performance outfit.

The announcer did his job and the stage lights dimmed. All the female actors that I was going to honour were also backstage. The music began and I first had to honour Hema Malini. I was wearing an orange skirt and yellow blouse, like the one she wore in Sholay and ran on stage dramatically and started lip syncing,

“Aaaah! Jab tak hai jaan,

Jaane Jahaan, main nachungi...” And continued the dance and brought Hema ji forward with my hand in hers.

Next was Madhuri Dixit, for whom I performed ‘Dhak dhak karne laga’, then came Aishwarya Rai with ‘Barso re megha’.

They all danced with me for each and every song with their energetic smiles.

Next, ‘Radha’ from Student of the Year started playing and I danced. In between my performance, I ran backstage and brought Shreya Ghoshal forward and she and I did some moves together, smiling happily. Then played, ‘Dekha ek Khwab’ and I brought Rekha ji on stage. Finally, it was Priyanka Chopra’s turn and her song, ‘Exotic’ blared from the speakers.

After every celebrity was on stage, Priyanka’s song from ‘Gunday’ came from the speakers and we all danced to it in our own style. And since Priyanka was in the movie and I knew the steps by heart, we danced in sync.

“Tune maari entriyaan re

Dil mein baji ghantiyaan re...

Tan, tan, tan, tan...”

We both brought out right hands forward and pretended as if we were ringing a bell and laughed and the music stopped. Someone from the stage crew handed me a mike and I started speaking.

“Aurat maa hai, patni hai, beti hai,behen hai,bhaabhi hai...Usse kahi zyaada, aurat shakti hai (Woman is a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister. But above all, she is power!)” I said and raised my hands in a fist, showing strength.

“I have on stage with me, people we all grew to admire. I feel very humbled as I share a stage with them and to honour them with their works”. I turned to the women on stage and gave them a salute. They bowed their heads.

I turned towards the stage again and continued, “Learn to respect woman, you’re not gonna lose anything. You give respect, you earn it. This is to all the women in the world...” I said and I stood erect and brought my right hand to my forehead and gave a proper salute, staring straight. I saw everyone stand up and applaud. I smiled and said, “Thank you” and left the stage and changed into my old outfit.
