Kyler and I grab the hall pass and walk towards Mr. Kexel's room.
"Hey, Lillian, I'm sorry. I hate to spring this on you. I'll try not to be a nuisance," Kyler says. He seems really upset.
"Kyler, it's fine. I could use some help around the house. I'm short so I can never reach the top shelf," I joke. I mean, it's the truth. I can't reach the top shelf.
"So, Mr. Kexel, what does he teach?" Kyler asks.
"Science. Third period is history with Mrs. Stower. Then lunch is from noon to 12:55. Next is math with Ms. Winson. After we have Japanese with Dr. Urata and after that is gym with Coach Plaster. Last is our elective class, but I'm a special case so I spend that with Miss Fane," I provide.
He nods. We turn down the hall. My eyes scan the hallway. Mr. Kexel's lab is on the complete other side of the school from Miss Fane's room. Then I wince. There he is. Jameson Morrighan. He's got radiant sky blue hair and golden eyes. He breathes magic.
Jameson Morrighan. The 'prince' of the school. Rumored to have an MMP of 101. He rules the school because his family has a deal with the sisters. The Sisters allow the Morrighans to stay in Warcaster in exchange for something. So Jameson feels entitled and treats everyone else like peasants. He treats me the worst. It's like he's claimed me as his personal punching bag.
Jameson hasn't seen me or Kyler yet so I pull Kyler into a crevice.
He looks at me in confusion and whispers, "What's wrong? Who's that guy?"
I shake my head. I can't tell him about Jameson.
"We have to go around."
Now it's his turn to shake his head.
"Unless you know an alternate route we're just gonna have to rough it."
I sigh. He's right. We come out of the hole and walk forward.
Jameson's golden eyes lock on to me.
"What are you doing in the hallway in the middle of class Lily? Skipping? I can't believe you'd risk that, considering the current state of your mother," He taunts.
"Miss Fane kept me back. I wouldn't dream of skipping," I mutter and look down at my feet. My mother barely works and it's only because Jameson made an exception for her. But now I'm indebted to him.
Jameson steps forward and lifts my chin up, "Don't let me down. You owe me." With a sneer on his lips, he pats my head. I freeze.
Kyler speaks up, "I don't know who are, but Lillian and I need to get to class. So, could you please let us get going?"
Jameson's brow furrows and rage fills his face, "Who do you think you are, speaking back to me? Do you know who I am?"
Kyler rolls his eyes, "If I knew who you were then I wouldn't have said I don't know who you are. But even if I did I don't care who you are. I came from the capital where everyone would eat you alive, no matter your status." He briskly walks past Jameson, grabs my arm and pulls me along.
Jameson is at a loss for words. I can guarantee no one has ever said that to him.
Kyler looks down at me.
"Lillian I can tell you're strong. Why do you let him treat you like that?"
"I owe him. He's pulled some strings and made sure my mom keeps her job even though she doesn't work. It's thanks to him my sister and I aren't on the streets."
"Still, you can't let him bully you. Now continue on leading us."
I lead Kyler across the school and finally, we make it to Mr. Kexel's lab without any other interruptions. We walk in and head up to Mr. Kexel's desk. Everyone else is in the middle of an experiment.
