Chapter 4
Sunday, June 14th
Adrianna
“Everybody! Jeremy asked to come watch him and his friends play football at the park so we’re going! Be ready in five minutes!” Jane shouts from upstairs.
Ever since Thursday, Jeremy has been bothering us. I think he likes Jane.
“Lisa, do I have to go?” I ask my guardian.
“Yes, Adrianna. Be supportive of your sister and her social life!” Be supportive of my sister? Yeah, right.
I head upstairs to make myself as unattractive as possible. There are going to be a lot of boys there, including the new kid in the neighborhood, Jonathon.
Everywhere I go, I attract a lot of attention from guys. Is it self-centered to say that I’m very pretty? Some people I’ve met have likened me to an Asian supermodel. Jane says that if I lose my glasses, I very well could be.
“Adrianna! We’re leaving now!” Jane yells from the other room.
Great.
I’m still dressed in this tank top I was wearing today, and it’s not the best thing to wear when you are trying not to impress boys. It’s the worst thing, because it’s black, and it hugs my figure. It’s a good thing I’m wearing my glasses today. I’ll twist my hair into a knot on the way there. And I’ll wear my rollerblades. Rollerblading in public is totally unstylish and rollerbladers are humiliating to be seen with. All the boys will ignore me.
I can’t find my rollerblades.
“Adrianna, we’re going!” Katie shouts.
I run down the hall, outside to the driveway, when Rena bumps into me, knocking off my glasses, which I then trip over. There go my glasses.
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry! So, so sorry! Oh, my gosh, so sorry!”
After sputtering a million “sorry’s” to me, Rena offers to let me borrow her mom’s contacts. Of course, I can’t object, because Rena is already running up and asking her mother. Samantha consents, and lends me her contacts. I’m now forced to go back inside and put them on. Then I realize my hair knot is going to fall out any second; I put it up in a ponytail. That falls out pretty quickly, so I put in a half-tail. That falls out too. My hair is way too silky today to hold anything; I let my hair fall to my shoulders. I look quite pretty.
Most girls like that. Me, I hate being pretty. It gives me way too much unnecessary attention.
When I come back out, everyone starts gushing, “Oh, you look so cute Adrianna!” Jane sidles up to me and whispers “It’s Jonathon, isn’t it?”
Sure. Think what you want.
Even Katie winks at me once we’re in sight of the boys, who have already started tossing the football around.
First thing Jeremy does when he saw Jane walking across the field is run up to her and hug her. He then says “Hey” to Katie, Rena and Ivy, and “You look nice” to me.
Jeremy introduces his other friends Matthew, Cody, and Elliot, and Jonathon, then go back to football. I roll my eyes, and notice Jonathon in the back, watching me. When I catch him looking me up and down his face flushes red, and I give him a toxic scowl.
