Chapter 11
Thursday, June 18th
Adrianna
I wake up this morning feeling like there’s nothing that can stop me. After all, I know my power!
Then I get stopped.
The morning is normal. I mean, Katie and Jane avoid me, but that’s pretty much normal.
Around three o’clock in the afternoon, the doorbell rings. The same old ritual starts up again. Katie and Jane shout “I’LL GET IT!” simultaneously, collide, and yell at each other. Katie starts fake crying, and Jane reaches for the phone, because she always mixes up the two sounds. I quickly explain to Jane that the doorbell is a very different sound than the phone ringing, while calmly opening the door. Then I face the guest and apologize, and then have them explain their business. Sometimes it’s solicitors, sometimes it’s the boys, sometimes it’s Ivy, Rena and Sophie. Sometimes all three. This time, it’s Jonathon.
What is he doing here? I haven’t spoken to him since the awkward soccer incident.
My best option is probably to be polite. I smile at him. Not like, “Hi! I’m so glad to see you!”, but more like “Hello, and how can I help you?”
He looks uncomfortable. “Um, can I come in?”
“Uh-huh. Let’s go up to my room.” I say stiffly.
I close my bedroom door and sit down in my beanbag chair. I offer my second one to Jonathon. “So, what’s up?”
“Well, it’s actually a bit embarrassing,” he begins. I nod for him to go on. While I do so, I’m thinking of different reasons he could be here. Maybe he’s going to profess his undying love for me. Wait, that’s ridiculous.
“I...heard you talking.”
“Um, excuse me?” What kind of confession is this?
“With Sophie. It was about...about your secret.” He looks up, to see if I know what he’s talking about. And I know all right. I don’t know how it happened, but somehow, Jonathon now knows that I’m a weather-controlling alien. I feel faint. No! You have to stay strong! The best way to deal with this situation is to play dumb.
“Ha ha ha...secret? I don’t have a secret!” I nervous laugh.
“But...you do. And I know it. I’m really sorry I overheard. I won’t tell anyone, I promise!” Jonathon cries. Okay, what do I do now? If Jonathon knows, does anyone else know? How could he have heard us? We always are discreet with our talks! Or are we more obvious than we think?
“Oh. Then, you know I’m an alien.” I say, feeling defeated. Jonathon nods. I start to babble.
“I knew we should’ve talked in more secret places! And of course, with me passing out like that, very randomly one day, that was so strange, and... well of course you were right to think something is wrong. And then our conversation you heard one day just confirmed it all. I’m sorry Jonathon. I guess I’ve been ignoring you a lot. I do want to hang out with you, but it’d just complicate things, with me being a weather-controlling alien and Sophie can control metal. Supposedly we’re from this strange planet called Almnerixi, and we’re citizens of this one tribe called Noxia. It’s just so much for me to handle! You understand, right?” I finish.
