Chapter 10
Maggie
Everyone stares at me in horror as they realize the people pouring out of what was thought to be an enemy ship, are really on our side. I am braced and ready, but when Jake explodes, I still flinch. He is a very explosive young man.
“I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU DID THIS! First you tell us we’re on a crash course because we shifted while you reset our systems! Then you tell us they’re enemies! And finally, you are the one to break us the news that we just killed an entire ship of our own people! Do you even realize what you did? DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THIS WILL COST US?!” Jake rants. I sit there quietly, still keeping up the act of what I like to call, “horrified and ashamed”.
“I’m sorry, Jake,” I say. Do you know why I’ve been saying “sir” this whole time? Because I need Jacob to believe that I just might have a “thing” for him, and he’ll know when I’m being sincere. But this is all just an act he can’t know about.
I see Jake pause here, once he realizes that he was just called his real name by Maggie the Idiot, as he and Andrea affectionately call me.
“You...didn’t call me sir,” he says carefully, like this is some amazing event. Well, I guess it is, for him. That’s all I’ve ever called him since he recruited me on Almnerixi.
“I can’t believe I just didn’t hear or...or sense the message coming in! It just...slid right past me,” I say, keeping my “horrified/ashamed” act going.
“Wait, what message?” Jacob asks suspiciously.
I sigh sadly. “There was one that came in right before the rocket went down. It was the leader, Captain Ovain.” I hear Jacob intake a sharp breath. I know they are friends. But this isn’t an act. He really did send me a message. And I received it just fine.
“O...Ovain?” he asks shakily.
“I’m so sorry everyone,” I whisper, addressing everyone in the room. Andrea slowly stands up, despite what she had just done. This is also part of my plan, to make Andrea be partly responsible as well.
“Maggie, will you leave the control room? I think we should give you a break from navigating the computer,” she says. Perfect. This is also part of the plan. I slowly get up from my chair, always looking at the floor, not making any eye contact, and depart from the room, leaving Jake and Andrea staring at me and each other in horror.
I move slowly up the levels and through the corridors, because by now, everyone has heard of what happened up at the control room. It seems as though everyone is out in the hallways. I try hard to not cheer in victory and smile.
As soon as I reach my room, I lock myself in and get out my universal video communicator (also called a UVC). Instantly I contact Evan.
“Maggie, is that you?” he asks excitedly, his black, shiny hair falling across his face. I smile hugely.
“Mission One is a success!” I say as loud as I can without being overheard from outside.
“YES! YES! DID YOU HEAR THAT JONNY? YES!! SUCCESS! SUCCESS!”
“Yes, I heard you Evan,” a boy in the background mumbles. He looks eerily like Evan. I don’t know him, not directly, but I know he is the one Evan is staying with. After all, Jonathon’s Earth position is one of the universal rest points. All kinds of aliens come to his family’s home, wherever that may be. He always is on the move, to avoid being tracked by Jake and his pals.
