Chapter 33

Jacob

“Sir, what does this orange button do?” an officer asks me from across the room. I am standing next to Andrea at the holographic map in the center. With his question, my hands grip the device tightly as I try not to lose control.

He’s just an officer. Just a stupid incompetent officer. Don’t lose your temper over someone like him. I hear Andrea think in her head. She knows I can pick up on her thoughts whenever.

“When you volunteered yourself for this job, I assumed you knew what you were doing,” I say in a quiet, menacing tone.

“W-well, you k-kind of forced us into i-it, s-sir,” he stutters. My men know to fear my softer voice more than my loud, abrasive one.

“Hmph, that’s not how I remember it,” I say. “You’ll do good to keep your facts straight and your head clear.” There is a snap accompanied by a whimper as I bend his finger back. Andrea turns and looks at me in warning. I shrug as if to say “I couldn’t help it!”

“And the orange button triggers a set of instructions on how to operate the computer, ironically enough,” I scowl.

            “Yes, sir,” he replies meekly.

“Jake,” Andrea prods my shoulder, making me turn around.

“What is it?” I turn my scowl on her, my mood turned rotten.

“Look.” She merely points out the giant heat-proof, pressurized glass circling half the room. I follow her finger, and my eyes fall on a flickering ball of fire. My insides seize up apprehensively.

“Is it coming towards us? Are we in the line of fire?” I ask her. She merely laughs.

“No, silly. It’s a star. It’s Earth’s sun, to be specific.” I instantly relax.

“I wouldn’t have guessed.” From our distance, the Sun looks like a sparkling jewel no bigger than my pinky finger. Even so, this is good news.

“We’re nearing their solar system. We’re still a good ten billion miles from it, but with the speed of this ship, we should be on Earth in a few days,” Andrea states. I almost start jumping up and down with the glee of a small child. But I am not a small child, so I suppress my urge.

“Wonderful,” I grin. Watch out earthlings. Jakey is coming.
