Chapter 19

Tuesday, June 22nd

Alexis

“Hey Valerie, where are my skates?” I ask Valerie breathlessly. I’m packing all the things I want to keep with me when we move to Arizona, and my skates have somehow disappeared!

Adam is sitting on the floor in the family room, sorting through hockey trophies. He snickers. I sigh.

“You wouldn’t happen to know where they went, would you Adam?” I turn to my brother. He coughs and looks to me, a serious expression on his face.

“No. Have you lost them again?” he says with the worst poker face on earth. His lips are twitching, as if he’s trying not to smile.

“Why can’t you just hand them over and stop causing so much trouble?” I ask him. He throws his hands in the air, as though saying “I surrender!”

“Hey, it wasn’t me who took them, it was Nick!” he says. I sigh and stalk off to my other brother’s room, where I know he’s packing.

I walk through Nick’s door as he stands up, looking deceivingly innocent. I look him straight in the eye.

            “Hand over the skates.”

He looks around as if he is saying “Who, me?!”

“Yes, you! Where’d you hide them?” I ask. He shrugs. I stand there, hands on my hips, tapping my foot. Finally, he bursts out laughing. He points under his bed while clutching his side.

I walk over to his bed, stoop over, and scoop up my skates, hidden right under the comforter. I glare daggers at him, and turn to the door. All at once, he stops laughing.

I whirl around, thinking Nick is getting ready to play another prank, but he’s staring at his arm. I follow his gaze, and see myself looking at shimmering, glass-like splinters sticking out of his sweatshirt sleeve. I stride over to him, grabbing hold of his arm and looking at it. He’s still frozen, staring frightened at the tiny daggers.

I touch them gently. Nick flinches. The little slivers are cold.

            They’re icicles.

I feel a drip on my finger. They’re melting. Nick and I watch, as the ice slowly dissolves. Once the last fragment is gone, he turns on me.

“What the heck did you just do?!” he yells. I cower. “You glare at me, and suddenly these ice daggers fly out of nowhere and land in my arm! Care to explain how it happened?!” I slowly back out of his room as he advances on me.

“Whoa, what’s going on?” I hear Adam’s voice behind me. I reel around in fear. Two is definitely not better than one, when it comes to my brothers. “What’d you do this time, Alexis?”

“She almost killed me!” Nick screams. Adam looks at him strangely. Then he turns to me.

“Really? And how did she do that? Shoot lasers from her eyes?” he asks sarcastically. I’m still trembling in between the two.

            “Not lasers, daggers!”

“Wow, it was that intense, was it?” Adam tries not to laugh. I slowly take a baby step to the right of them, towards the door.
