Chapter 16

Maggie

I’m sitting in my room when the UVC buzzes. It’s Evan. As usual, he’s celebrating.

“I did it, I did it, oh yeah, yeah, yeah!” he sings happily.

“So, what amazing feat did you do this time?” I ask him in greeting.

“Nice to see you too, little sister. Isn’t it such a great day today? Oh wait, you’re in outer space. You can’t tell where you are!” my brother shouts out. I roll my eyes. I notice Jonathon is nowhere to be seen in the background.

“Can you just tell me what you did already? And where’s Jonathon?” I ask.

“Jonathon went out with some friends or something. And I- oh, I!” He begins praising himself again.

“Would you cut it out and get to the point?!” I whisper-shout.

“Oh, right, right, right. So here I was, minding my own business one night here in the lovely suite of Jonathon’s room, and- bzzzt! I’m getting a call!” I nod for him to go on. “So, I opened the UVC up, thinking it was you, but no! It wasn’t!”

“What?! You were talking to a complete stranger?! Via communicator?!?!” I interrupt. “Do you have any idea what kind of risk that is for our mission?!”

“Jeepers, hold your horses, little sis! It was Willow’s mom, calling from that Penny state or somewhere!” he says to me.

“Pennsylvania,” I correct. “Sorry for freaking out. Go on,” I urge.

“Well, she’s got news,” Evan says, holding out the suspense.

            “What? What is it?”

“Well, first of all, they live in Pennsylvania, in the United States. And second, they’re dad died. And third, they’re moving to Arizona! In just a few Earth days! Wahoo, victory for us!” he cheers. I smile hugely at him.

“Is there word of anyone else?” I ask, hoping. He shakes his head as his smile falls from his face. But he quickly lights up again.

“But Willow’s mom did tell me that she was going to fill in Adrianna’s and Sophie’s adoptive mothers, so they won’t be confused and like ‘What is going on around here?’” he says. I hear a loud bell ringing in the hallway.

“Evan, they’re doing the routine check of the bunkrooms. I’ll contact you as soon as I can!” I say hurriedly.

“Okay, Mags! Nighty-night!” Evan says, still celebrating as I log off.
