Chapter 12

Maggie

I’m lying in my bunk thinking about our next moves when my UVC starts vibrating on my desk. I pick it up and open it. It’s Evan.

“Mission Five is a success! And it went so much better than I planned! It was hilarious!” Evan cracks up on the other end. Jonathon joins in.

“Evan almost blew his cover, it was ridiculous!” Jonathon laughs.

“Dude, don’t tell her I messed up!”

“Well did you?” I ask, suddenly worried.

“Well, yeah, but I fixed it! Everything went fine, okay? I know what Sophie and Adrianna’s powers are!”

Our plan was to send Evan over pretending to be Jonathon, since they look so alike, and find out what Adrianna and Sophie’s powers are, since they are closest to them.

“Well, what are they?” I’m bursting with impatience.

“Adrianna is a weather girl, like me-“

“Did you seriously just call yourself a girl?” Jonathon says teasingly.

“Shut up!” Evan laughs. “And Sophie is a rocker.”

“That’s amazing Evan! Did you get close enough to get a reading?” One of Evan’s lesser powers is to read the level of power another person had.

“Well, Adrianna is a six-power, but Sophie wasn’t around, so I couldn’t get hers.” I sigh, exasperated.

“Why didn’t you get hers too?”

“Hey, go easy on him; he’s nursing a hurt ego. Adrianna is stronger than him.” Jonathon glows with pride. He is right; Evan is only a four-power.

I laugh. Jonathon is really like Evan; I hope they don’t confuse Adrianna too much.

“Can you try to get a reading of Sophie soon? You have to move locations in a little while.”

“Fine, fine, bossy-pants,” He sits back in his chair and puts his feet up on Jonathon’s desk. “Whatever you say.”

I hear footsteps coming down the corridor.

“I have to go. I’ll contact you later,” I whisper. I slam the UVC down and hide it underneath the bunk. I get my act together and slump forward in my chair, pretending to be ashamed again.

Just in time too. An officer opens the electronic sliding door, letting light into my dark barrack.

“Commander Jacob and Soldier Andrea would like to speak with you in the control room,” he says, looking around my room. I nod mutely and stand up. He leads me to the control room and opens the doors. Jake and Andrea stand at the hologram grid, looking at maps, and pointing to various planets and systems. I approach them.

“You needed me?” I say, making my voice waver.

“Thank you,” Andrea nods to the officer, dismissing him.

“Yes, we’ve made a decision,” Jake begins. If all goes according to plan, he is going to say just what I need him to.

“You’ve served us well for the past years,” Andrea says. I look at her, using my wondering-what-they’re-going-to-tell-me face.

“But we think you have pushed the limits a little too far. We need you off the ship to keep our mission focused,” Jake says. I stand there, acting like I’m letting the news sink in. Really, I’m overjoyed, because that’s exactly what I want. Our whole plan is to choose a path that would take too long, reset the navigational-computer while drifting into another ship’s way, say it’s an enemy ship (which we were so lucky it was; it was a stolen spy ship! Amazing!), destroy the ship, have Jake kick me off the ship, find another ship of the Noxians, beat Jake to Earth, gather the half-aliens, and defeat Jake and Andrea before they even get there! And of course, save Earth from a part in our civil war. All I can hope is that Evan finds out the location of the other girls before I get there.

“So once we get to the rest-point, we’re leaving you there. It’s up to you what you do next,” Jake says. I nod my head, still keeping up my horrified/ashamed act. “Officer,” he says, addressing a man to his right, “escort Soldier Maggie back to her bunkroom.”

“Yes sir!” As he leads me away, I hear Jake and Andrea talking.

“Well, we’re finally getting rid of her,” Jake says. Andrea’s tinkling laugh echoes in my head as the door shuts behind us.
