Chapter 39
Jacob
As soon as Rebecca leaves me, I launch myself into the air and follow her back to her friends. I’m not the best at flying, but I’ve learned to push my power to the maximum, so I manage.
When Rebecca gets back, Maggie and Evan jump up, along with another girl who must be on of the five half-bloods along with Rebecca. I lower myself carefully into a tree and I take out a small camera. I snap a picture of each of the girls, including Rebecca. We’ll need them for identification later, and I have to show Andrea as well.
I listen to their conversation, which isn’t very interesting. Maggie and Evan want to know what I told Rebecca, and she plays dumb and stands up for me when they tell her I’m evil. Good girl.
I do learn all the other girl’s names, which I mentally write down and attach to a picture.
After some badgering from her friends, Rebecca gets annoyed and walks away, presumably to her home. The plan is in action. That means I only have an hour or two before Rebecca meets me back here, and I still need to tell Andrea the good news.
I position myself to fly out of the tree, and while doing so I accidently jostle a branch, causing the girl called Adrianna to look around. The others are oblivious, but Adrianna knows I’m here. I’ll have to watch out for this one in the future.
After a few moments, she loses interest and turns back to her friends, and I lose no time in launching myself into the air.
I fly to the Phoenix Zoo, because that’s where I landed the escape pod. I landed behind some rocks in the mountain goat exhibit. I don’t understand why these stupid earthlings can’t let the animals live on their own in the wild where they belong. Instead they lock them in tiny cages to be stared at and live meaningless lives.
As soon as I get to the escape pod, I get out my universal video communicator and contact Andrea. Her image soon pops up on my screen.
“So, how did it go?” she asks immediately.
“It’s nice to see you too, Andrea,” I smirk. She rolls her eyes.
“Jake, just tell me.”
“Alright! It went perfectly.”
“Was it easy to gain her trust?” she asks.
“Was it easy?” I laugh. “She was mine the moment she laid eyes on me. It’s a good thing she’s pretty, or I might’ve had a little more difficulty.”
“Well good! What’s the plan then?”
“The girl, whose name is Rebecca, is going to meet me later tonight and then we’ll make our way to the Grand Canyon. Are you there yet? Will you be ready to accept us by tomorrow?”
“We didn’t make it in time to land tonight, but we will land tomorrow night, and you can board then.”
“Very well. We need to make haste though. Maggie and Evan will have a plan as well,” I say. From the other line, I hear someone call out Andrea’s name.
“I have to go Jake. Don’t worry, we’ll be ready.” The screen goes dark when Andrea cuts the connection.
I stand up and walk around the small escape pod and gather my things. I won’t be coming back here after tonight. I’ll let the zoo workers decide what to do with the actual escape pod.
Once I have my things, I walk outside and fly back to the park near Rebecca’s house. I see her walking across the field, so I fly lower and call out her name.
“Rebecca! How wonderful to see you again!” She looks up at me and shrieks. I land next to her and cover her mouth with my hand.
“What are you doing?!” I whisper-shout. She looks at me apologetically and I take my hand away.
“You can fly?!” she asks.
“Of course. You can too. I’ll teach you later. Are you ready?” I say. I watch her face in amusement. Her eyes are wide open and so is her mouth.
“I’ll take that as a yes. Now come on, let’s get going!” I grab her hand and pull her away from the park and into the street. She trots alongside me, her face aglow with excitement. Yes, it is a good thing she’s pretty. I smile at her, and she smiles back.
This will be quite the adventure.
