I thought my day was going just fine.
I woke up on time, a rarity. I had a great breakfast and shockingly didn't break a spoon or bowl. My clothes were perfect; they miraculously held no signs of wrinkles or stains. My shoes were by the door, right where I left them, ready to go. And my pet dog Monie surprised me by not soiling the carpet again.
I received a call that informed me of wonderful news. Trying to apply for a job and being on a waiting list for months, I finally got an interview. The moment I stepped outside, a cab headed down my street, and I hailed it. I made it with a half hour to spare. It's always good to arrive early, and I knew there was a cafe in the same building. Suddenly very confident, I was about halfway up the building when the elevator stopped to allow another person to enter.
And he was hot.
He was just wearing jeans and a pink shirt, but he looked really good. He didn't make eye contact, and I was glad for that. He just simply pressed the button for the top floor, the same floor I was going to, and stood next to me silently. I took quick glances at him, hoping he wasn't noticing.
We passed about four floors before I worked up the courage to speak. "Hi."
He turned his head to me straight on. He offered a little smirk and nodded once. "Hello." He faced the silver doors and his face went straight.
Great job, Namjoon. Way to make things awkward. Five more floors passed. "So, do you-"
The elevator suddenly jerked to a stop, and the sound of scraping metal pierced my ears. The lights went out completely, then flickered back to life. The stop caused me and the stranger to fall back, bracing ourselves against the wall. When the light returned, I looked to him. "Hey, are you okay?"
He looked back at me with panic in his gaze. He nodded quickly a few times, muttering, "I think so." He took a second to compose himself as best he could, then added, "What the hell happened?"
"I think the elevator broke." I stepped to the side and pressed the emergency button a few times. "You've got to be joking."
"Try the call button."
I did. Still nothing. I let out a heavy sigh. "Dammit..." I mumbled underneath my breath. My one chance for this job, after an agonizing wait, I was so close to achieving my dream. Now, I won't make it because I'm trapped in a box. I placed both hands on the silver doors. I put my fingers into the middle of the two doors and attempted to pry them open. "Come on... dammit!"
The man, now calm, leaned back to rest on the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. "I don't think that'll work. I guess we'll just have to wait."
Why did this have to happen? "I was having such a great day."
"Something bad was bound to happen eventually."
I whipped around to stare at him. "Excuse me?"
He smirked shyly, casting his eyes downside. "S-Sorry. Just...making small talk. I thought it would lighten the mood."
"Nice try." I slowly slid down the wall, groaning. "This wasn't supposed to end up like this. I was doing just fine." I covered my face with a hand, frustration taking over. "I'm taking the stairs next time."
I didn't expect the man to answer. Or for him to walk over and sit down directly in front of me. "What do you want?" I snapped a little too harshly.
"I'm sorry that you're stuck in here. But you need to remember that so am I. So just calm down a little." He leaned forward. "We can't be in here forever. They're probably getting help right now."
