Chapter 38
*Athena's Point of View *
I ran my hand over the page of the book, "The Outsiders." I was in the library by myself since it was summer and most people wouldn't go to the library in the summer willingly. I enjoyed sitting by myself and reading, it passed time and I was able to be in someone else's shoes for some time. I had bought this book the other day, I didn't like having the anxiety that came with a library book. I took my time reading some books and I felt uneasy when I had limited time to finish it. Being able to read in the library made me feel better about reading, there was no noise to distract me.
I felt my body jerk when someone sat down next to me on the small couch. The person ran their hand through my hair, feeling its soft texture. I enjoyed the sensation while it lasted. "I have missed coming here with you," Nathan informed me as he threw his arm around my shoulder. I sat closer to him, tilting my head against his shoulder as I continued reading the book. "is it any good?" He wondered, taking the book into his hands.
I nodded my head, grabbing the story back, "it's my new favorite book." Nathan decided to mess around with me, holding the book out of my grasp. "Nathan, can I please have the book back?" I asked politely.
He smiled lightly, "on one condition." His face leaned closer to mine, my adrenaline was racing already. I missed being with him like this. "A kiss," he said cheekily. I laughed to myself, he would never change. I grabbed his face, pressing his lips against mine. I kept one hand on his face while the other grabbed my book from his fingers. Nathan pulled away with a scowl, "sneaky girl." I opened the book back to where I left off, I wanted to finish it before I left.
We sat in silence for a few minutes until I spoke. "Nathan, where did you go?" I questioned him, it was something that has been on my mind since I saw him at the party. He disappeared like nothing happened then he comes back as if it didn't happen.
Nathan looked down at his lap, avoiding eye contact with me. "I don't want to talk about it, princess."
I sighed as I closed my book, marking what page I was on. "You know I won't judge you-" I began to tell him, wanting him to know it was okay to tell me if he felt like it. He snapped his head up to look at me.
I stared into his green eyes as he interrupted me. "I said I don't want to talk about it," he snapped. Nathan sat in silence, breathing slowly like he was pacing himself.
"You tell me you don't love me, how I meant nothing to you. Next, you go hang out with the scums of our town then you disappear. I sat in my room for weeks asking myself what I did wrong, how I could get you back. I thought you were never coming back. I understand if it's a hard subject, but I want something to explain what you did." I stood up from the couch, grabbing my things. "Just something to tell me I wasn't the one who drove you away, Nathan."
I couldn't take my eyes off his emerald shade eyes, they were so light and gentle. He wasn't getting angry with me like he usually does, he was only firm with his answers. "It's not your business, Athena." He gritted his teeth. I gave him one last glance before walking out of the library. I didn't need a full answer from him, I wanted to know if he left because of me. If I was so bad to him that he needed to leave to forget about me for a while, something little. I subconsciously pulled out my phone and dialed Dean's phone number.
He answered almost immediately. "Hey babe," I heard him say. "What's up?"
I didn't rethink my words before I said, "my house. You have 5 minutes, be there or be square." Dean hung up hastily, I knew he would be over in 3 minutes. I needed something to get Nathan off my mind, Dean was the only distraction from the main attraction, Nathan.
