After class, I saw Declana sitting in the corner of the hallway, all scrunched up, depressed. I went up to her. "Hey, what's the matter?" I asked her, as if I didn't know.
Declana
"It's all about Keith! I thought we connected, we were best friends. I thought we would help each other. But instead, he first doesn't help with our science project at all and I barley had time to do it by myself, so we got a D on our science grade! Then he gets so caught up in basketball that he makes friends with potentially a person who might ditch him one day! And because of his new friendship with Ethan, he doesn't want me to be his friend anymore so I'm all alone!" I exclaimed. "Well, maybe it's time to move on from him, to say a different person. Then you both go separate ways instead of just him," suggested Paige. I stood up and shrugged. "Well, things have changed a lot. And, I like being Keith's friend. But, why won't be be mine?" I wondered. Paige sighed. "Have you ever thought that he was using you, to stand up for the bullies that are now his friends? Now that he's achieved his goal, he doesn't need you anymore," explained Paige. I was deep in thought. Could that really be true? Keith did really want to be my friend when I stood up for him a couple weeks ago. Was is only me who wanted to be his true friend? It all lines up to this. "I-I guess," I replied. "But we promised we'd go to each other's events. I'd go to his tournament and he'd go to my concert." "But since they're on the same day tomorrow that can't happen. Besides, believe me, you're better off without him," stated Paige. I sighed heavily. I knew that was the depressing truth.
Paige
Even though Declana was still quite depressed, I think I've gotten through to her! Now that I've completed my part of the plan, I wonder how Ernest was doing his part with Keith?
Keith
Since Ethan is in different classes than me, I walked through the halls on my own. Then, behind me, I heard Ernest calling my name. "Keith! Come hear!" he called. I usually would never talk with nerds but since I had nothing better to do, I'd listen to what he had to say. When Ernest finally caught up with me I asked, "So, what do you need?" "It's about Declana. Are you guys still friends?" he wondered. My eyes widened. "Ummm. I don't know," I replied. "Well I'm not forcing you or anything, but don't you think you were friends for just one reason?" suggested Ernest. I shrugged. I had a feeling I knew what he was gonna say. "You only became interested in ever being her friend after she stood up for you a couple weeks ago. and now, that you're best friends with Ethan, you don't need her anymore do you?" That's what I thought. I've heard it before. "I guess that's what it feels like," I stated. "But I can see you're turning back and thinking about her. Don't! You've moved on! You don't need her! She's just fine, don't worry. She's, in good hands," explained Ernest. I looked at him for a moment. That last sentence he said really caught my attention, but Ernest also had a point. We're better off being without each other, as hard as it might seem, we'll be happy on our own! Like old times. "You're right," I replied, and walked away. I just hope he really is right about that.
