The truth was I was not alright. I would possibly never be alright. It would probably take a thousand apologies to right everything. I thought about when I was five and my mom had told me seemingly endless times to be humble and be grateful for all that I had, but it just seemed so hard. How was I expected to be grateful when I was about two seconds away from watching Micheal Fusco, my one true love, throw a punch into Derek's beautiful face?
"What's wrong?" Derek asked holding my shoulders with his firm grip. His fingers slightly dug into my skin, letting me feel the tension he felt. Just ten feet behind him stood Mikey, his perfectly straight posture and sullen look upon his face told everyone in the room that he was extremely furious. His dark eyes were glued to mine and mine to his. What was he thinking?
His eyes seemed to ask 'Why?' So I shrugged and that was exactly at which point Derek turned around. I guess Mikey didn't realize who I was kissing until that instant. his dark eyes lit up with fear when their eyes locked paths.
I didn't know what to do? What to say? The dark feeling in the cataclysmic atmosphere was enough to make the hairs on someone's arm stand up.
Derek leaned in closer to me, his hot breath tickling the skin by my ear. "Let me guess, ex-boyfriend?" He smirked as his presence let me. I longed to be held closer to him, but for that there was a time and a place and this was unfortunatly not it.
"bingo." I whispered trying to move my mouth as little as possible. Mikey's eyes were no longer on me but on Derek. "Listen Mikey, I said I was done and I meant it." I said after clearing my throat. In that moment I felt bold and not like a weak girl who couldn't stand up for herself. I felt strong.
"And so the next day, you go and hook up with Derek Spencer? I thought you were better than that." He spoke without a single hint of hesitation.
"Mikey-" I began to speak.
"Let me handle this." Derek said pushing me behind him. "Hey Fusco, what do you not get when she says 'we're done'? She's with me now, dancerboy." He paused. Was that really what they called him? I felt bad and wanted to speak up but with his free hand Derek had me locked behind him. Soon enough his friends had gathered around him and all I could do was pray to god that they wouldn't hurt Mikey. His friends defiently were on the violent side of the male spectrum and as much as I wanted to tell Mikey off, I couldn't stand the thought of any of them laying so much as a finger on him. "She doesn't love you anymore dipshit, so move on."
"Kalen, please listen to me." I was listening. Frankly I didn't have any other choice. " I love you and always will, but I'm telling you now-"
"Fusco, get the...." His eyes wandered to another corner before flashing back. He took a big gulp of beer before speaking again, "hell outta here b'fore me an my buddies make it so ya can't dance your pretty little gayboy dance........gayboy" Kalub piped in obviously drunk. His lack of literacy bringing out my inner grammarian. I just couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't just stand here and let others talk for me, I needed to talk to him.
"STOP!." I shouted over the millions of voices I could hear surrounding me. Derek's grip loosened and I slipped out into the middle of the fight circle that had been formed by almost everyone at the party, except the ones who actually were hooking up. "Let me talk to him....." I said turning around to look into Derek's eyes, telling him I would be fine. I took a step towards the patio of Greg's house and I heard another five steps in my direction. "Alone." I said keeping my eyes focused on the door. "Go have a beer, loosen up." I said as a final effort to get them to back off. Kalub jumped at the opportunity and they all left.
