"This is your mother, Rei."
The boy held my hand a little tighter, looking up at me as I eyed the woman in the seat who stared at her four year old son.
"But your my mommy, aren't you?"
I knelt down to Rei's level, smiling lightly to him, "I raised you, yes, I am your mother. But this woman created you. She gave birth to you, not me."
He tilted his head in slight confusion, "You'll understand better when your older, Rei. But this woman is your biological mother. She gave you your looks."
"I think I get it." He announced, staring hard at the woman.
"Hello little one. What's your name?"
"Rei." He answered right away, nodding lightly to the woman before him.
She looked messy, but relatively healthy.
"Is it alright if I have a word with your mommy for a second?"
"Go wait outside with the guards, Rei."
The little boy nodded and walked out the door, immediately starting up some conversation with Munakata who had happened to be standing there as well.
As the door shut behind him, I turned with narrowed eyes back to the woman before me. She sat still, still like dead, and stared at the cuffs on her wrists.
"I was going to name him Yoshiro." She began.
"Well, you might have been able to if you hadn't left him for dead." I retorted as calmly as I could.
Questions wracked my mind, but I couldn't get angry. Munakata taught me that, those who are calm will be focused and will be victorious.
"You have no idea what I've gone through. He would have been dead if I kept him!" She yelled, tears lined her eyes and I stiffened.
"Captain said that you were a drug addict."
"Only after I lost him. I want him back. If I have him I'll be better, I promise. If you just give him to me then-"
"He, is not an object! He is not your magical healer!" I objected quickly, throwing my hands out to the side and trying to keep my aura calm, "He is just a little boy and he needs all of your attention and love, he needs someone to teach him how to read and write and how treat others and he- my son, Rei, is mine. I will be the one to give him all those things. I promised him a life better than mine and with you - that promise is obliterated."
She sat with her mouth slightly open, tears ran down her face and she sniffed lightly but I didn't let it phase me.
Hopefully, neither of us will ever see this woman again.
