I was standing, leaning against a wall with my eyes serenly closed.
The party was still going strong around me, winding down just a little as some of the exhaustion finally kicked into everyone.
I could still hear the beats of music vibrating on the floor and lyrics making their way to my ears when a sound perturbed this.
"Hello Faith" a dangerously calm voice uttered quietly. It was very close as I felt their breath feather my cheek.
My eyes snapped open and I swivelled my head to the left "You?" I automatically responded.
She smiled eerily "Yes me. Who did you think it was?" She tilted her head and batted her fake eyelashes at me "Ryder? He can't save you every time"
I rolled my eyes and sighed "He doesn't need to. Now what it is that you want Valerie?" The quicker I asked the quicker this was over, I hoped at least.
As she leaned closer I could smell the faint but lingering scent of an alcoholic beverage on her breath "What I want is for you to stay away from Ryder but you never listen" she said through gritted teeth.
I laughed and she recoiled as she was taken aback "You look really pretty Valerie. I mean it" She looked really nice with her blonde hair in a side parting and braided from her fringe right the way to the back of her head forming a chic bun. The bun was adorned with champagne coloured dainty flower pins that matched her flowy dress.
Her mask slipped for a second but her eyes narrowed at me and she surveyed my face "Don't think you can break me down like this Faith. I know better than that" her eyes forming slits.
I shrugged my shoulders "Well it's the truth" I began to look ahead of me at the crowd and smile.
She stomped away from me wriggling her way back into the throng of people. I really did mean it. She did look nice. And this was one of our last days together. Maybe when she looked back at this we both could remember something other than rivalry and hate. Even if it bloomed for just a moment between us. Sometimes, that was all that was needed.
But as I watched the scene in front of me unfold and shook my head and laughed, maybe for her it was too early for that.
She had found Ryder in the crowd, he had been dancing on the outskirts of the crowd with his friends. She didn't even bother pulling him aside, in fact maybe she wanted to put on a show, as she grabbed his shoulders roughly and pushed her lips to his before he could stop her.
I smiled, knowing just was about to happen. Ryder grabbed her arms and pushed her back hard, so hard that she almost fell if Blane hadn't caught her from behind. He wiped his lips with the back of his hand to remove the remnants of vermilion red lipstick she probably left on his lips with the sheer force she used as he began angrily scrunching up his fists and shouting at her. Her eyes almost popped out of her head as he seemed to rant.
I pushed off of the wall and made my way to the centre of this spectacle. I wrapped my hand around Ryder's closed fist and as he turned to look at me he stopped talking and breathed heavily as I smiled at him "I'm so sorry baby but you need to know what happened just now. She kissed me before I knew what she was doing but I swear I pushed her off as soon as I realised!" He grabbed my shoulders and desparately looked into my eyes.
I laced my fingers with his as my smile remained on my face and his worrisome look changed into one of confusion "It's okay baby. I saw it happen. But even if I hadn't I know you would tell me the truth and that you wouldn't have kissed her back. I completely trust you" and what I did next was for myself and maybe slightly to irk the girl that had probably turned green watching our every move.
