Safe wings

Chapter 12:

When I get out of the ring I watch as Lucas scores big. But then he is flown off. The bull tramples all around him. I see a bit of blood and that pulls me over the edge. I jump the fence and run to him.

Someone yanks me backwards by my arms.

"Excuse me you have to stay back." They say. I yank away from their grasp.

"I just beat every boy out here I think I am fine." I hiss.

I run to Lucas' side as he stands up. "Lucas are you okay?!" I ask.

He nods. He wraps his arm around me and smiles.

We waste the last five hours by talking and walking around until time for awards.

I won second in barrels, little miss flirt won 1st.

Then I won first in bull riding. I smile.

Lucas wins third. The announcer interviews each rider about how they feel from being beat by a girl.

After a chorus of "okay", "wow", "she's going down"

"First time luck" and some insulting remarks, it's Lucas's turn. He is the last to be interviewed.

"I am very upset I got beat, but at least I can say I got beat by the best. Alyssa is truly amazing. She is my best friend and I just want her to know I'm so proud of her. Congratulations Alyssa. I love you!" He says. Then he runs from the small stage to where I stand since each man had to go onto stage to say their peice.

He runs to me and picks me up in a hug. I laugh and smile. He plants a soft kiss on my forehead.

"Thanks Lucas." I say. He smiles. We walk back to the truck with Uncle Austin behind us.

"Guys it's already 9:00!" Austin says. It is dark and we have six hours to drive.

"Can you drive that?" I ask.

Austin nods.

"Yeah."

Lucas climbs into the drivers side of the back seat. I climb in the passengers side and then set in the middle. I lay my legs across the seat and lay my head on Lucas's leg.

He smiles down at me.

"You tired?" he asks. I nod.

"Sleep," he says. I smile and lay my hand on his arm. He laughs and then grabs it with the opposite hand and intwines our fingers.

"Hey Lucas?" I ask. He raised an eyebrow. "Yes?".

"I love you too." I whisper before kissing his cheek then laying my head back down.

He takes his hand away and then pulls off his plaid shirt. The black one is still on. I snuggle next to him and he grabs my hand again. I sleep for a while until he wakes me up by moving.

"Hmm?" I ask not opening my eyes.

"I have to drive for about an hour, I'll be back before you know it" he says then he stands and walks up front where Austin is already in the passenger seat. His warmth immediately fades away and I desperately want the hour to hurry. As I begin to get cold I pull off the thin aero shirt I have on and leave the tank top. I grab Lucas's plaid shirt that is thicker and slide it on. It's a bit big on me but it is warmer and I like it. I fall asleep for a few minutes until I am woken up again. Lucas climbs into the back and sees me in his shirt.

He smiles and then pulls me into his lap with his strong arms. He wraps his arms around my waist and I lay my head on his chest.

"You look cute." he whispers.

"Thanks."

"G'night" he says his lips still tickling my ear.

"Night." I relax and he kisses my head and then my cheek.

He runs his hand through my hair and I giggle.

"Stop, let me sleep." I whisper.

"Nope." he says quietly as he continues to run his hand through my hair.

After a while I finally drift to sleep.

In what seems like minutes the truck is stopped.

"We can't make it as far as I would like, we are gonna have to stay here." uncle Austin says. We are at a hotel.

He gets two rooms one for him and then one for me and Lucas to share.

We walk to our rooms and I kick off my shoes. I collapse on the bed and Lucas lays beside me. I instantly snuggle up next to his side. With a chuckle he wraps his arms around my waist.

"Night my little cowgirl." he says.

"Night cowboy." I say as he kisses my forehead. I fall asleep with my forehead pressed against his shoulder and one hand under my head the other on his chest.
