The Thirtieth Memory

I slid a layer of tape over the last box before cutting it and making sure it's wasn't going to come off. "That's the last one," I sigh.

You came closer and wrapped your arms around my waist, hugging me. "We'll be out of this state before you know it." I knew what he actually meant. We'll be away from your father before you even know.

I nodded spinning myself around so I can bury my face in your chest. I blinked hard so I wouldn't cry. I didn't want to cry over something so stupid. I tried to sniff quietly, but you heard it anyways. You pulled back to study my face, and I tried to smile, but you saw right through it. "What's wrong?"

I sighed, giving in to the tears and letting a few escapes, but wiping them away immediately. "Nothing."

"Don't give me that. What's bugging that brain of yours?"

I knew that it would be better if I told you instead of avoiding the question- you were a persistent person. "Do you know why my dad paid for me to go to college?" I asked, wiping my eyes again as tears continued to fall. "He said, 'At least you'll be out of the house and out of my life.'"

You sighed, pushing me back into your body and wrapping your arms around me once more. "You know he doesn't matter, right? He doesn't matter. You do, and I do. We don't need anyone else besides ourselves. Don't cry over him, okay? He's not worth it."

I sniffed, putting the last sentence on repeat in my brain. He's not worth it. He's not worth it. He's not worth it.

Soon, tears stopped running down my face and my cheeks were dry. I looked up at you and smiled. "Thanks."

You smiled. "Always.

I changed the subject. "Have you finished packing?"
"Almost. I have a few more boxes to finish and then I'm set to drive to North Carolina tomorrow with you and our boxes."

"Is your mom coming with us?" I asked, and you nodded your head.

"Yeah, but she's going to take a plane on the way back here, though. She said I'll need help decorating or something."

I laughed. "Can I come over and help you finish packing?"

You nodded and reached for my hand, and then we left my house and headed to yours.

The next day, we loaded all our boxes into your car, and then the two of us, plus Ruby, headed to UNC. My dad was at work when we left, and I knew that he'd done it on purpose. He didn't want to wish a living reminder of his crazy wife a good rest of their life. I wasn't sure if it hurt me, or if I was fine with it.

But I'm pretty sure it was the latter, because of the words you said the day before.

He's not worth it.

I stared down at the ring on my finger and smiled at the life you and I were going to create for ourselves.
