The Forty-Fourth Memory

Over a year later, after poor ol' Bernice died from the ever-stealing cancer, you and I decided that we were going to move to an actual house. So we were standing outside of the first option, holding hands and looking at the one-story house, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and absolutely beautiful.

Until you walked inside.

"Sure, it's a fixer-upper," the real estate said, turning around to smile at us. "But this house has some serious potential."

I nodded, though I couldn't really see it. "I suppose it does. But we don't exactly have time to do that kind of thing. We both have super time-consuming jobs, and I just don't know if we have time to pull out stained carpet and whatnot."

The lady, whose name happened to be Regina, nodded understandingly. "That's alright, I suppose. Well, we do have two more houses scheduled for today, would you like to see those instead?"

You nodded. "That would be nice."

Regina forced a smile on her face and nodded curtly before opening the front door and motioning for us to go through it.

The second house was slightly better. There was carpet in the living room and one of the bedrooms, hardwood in the other two, and tile in the kitchen and bathroom.

It wasn't bad, it was actually really pretty, but it wasn't exactly my style, and from the look on your face, it wasn't yours, either.

So, we looked at the next house, which was in the middle of your work, mine, and the beach. Also, it was really pretty, both inside and out. The outside was red brick with steps leading up to the front door. The entryway had dark wood floors, and every room besides the kitchen and bathroom did, too. The kitchen and bathroom had tile like the last house did. The bottom floor of the house had one full bathroom, a kitchen, one office, a dining room, laundry room, and the living room.

Upstairs was where all of the bedrooms were. There were five, which was excessive for two people, but we were also planning on a family, so it was kind of perfect. There was the main bathroom up there, and in the master bedroom, there was a bathroom and two walk-in closets. The other four bedrooms each had a smaller closet.

We both absolutely loved this one, and I knew by the look on your face you were almost absolutely sure that this was where you wanted to start our family.

"How much is it?" You asked Regina, resting your arms on the kitchen island while we discussed details.

She told us the price.

It was a lot of money, but for the house, it was actually a decent price. "You guys can have time to talk it over, I know it's a lot to process, but-"

We both stopped her, saying the exact same words at the same time. "We'd like to buy this house."

Regina laughed, relieved. "Great! There's a whole process, of course, but we'll discuss this back at the agency, on the fourteenth, if you guys are free?"

I nodded. "If we aren't we'll make ourselves free."

And so, not too long after, we had a house in our name.
