Quick note: this is a post-reveal situation set in their last year of high school
—————————————————————
It all started after the first few Akuma attacks.

Marinette started having nightmares about failing Paris and her partner and having Hawkmoth win. The way the nightmare went was always the same; an Akuma villain from the past, one that they have already defeated, would show up and start to destroy Paris like any normal Akuma, then Ladybug and Chat Noir would show up to try and take the villain down.

Except, there was always a twist.

Every nightmare had a different way of defeating Ladybug.

A different way of revealing her identity.

A different way of her having to watch her partner get hurt.

It pains her so much.

The worst ones were Marinette having to watch an akumatized version of herself fighting her partner, and no matter how much she tried, she couldn't look away. Her head was forced into a place where it couldn't move and she was forced to watch her partner be defeated by her.

She would always wake up crying, trembling in fear, having to rely on the Kwami that would always have just woken up to Marinette's cries to comfort her. Marinette hated seeming so weak. Which is why only Tikki knows.

Not even Adrien knows.

Even after they revealed their identities to each other, she didn't tell him.

And he knew something was wrong.

Adrien would always get some sort of dark, helpless aura around Marinette in the mornings, nagging at her as she fought to get rid of it and get through the day.

So, being the sneaky little kitty he was, he decided to figure out what was wrong himself.

Now transformed, Adrien perched by the side of his lady's window, watching her sleep. He felt kind of like a stalker at this point and prayed that no one would see him here. The window was open slightly and he kept silent as he listened for any noises of distress coming from his princess.

He might have been at this for only a couple minutes, maybe even an hour. He didn't know, as he was too focused on making sure what was causing Marinette so much pain. He saw her shift a bit under her blankets, his night vision seeing that she was shaking the slightest bit.

Next came the whimpers. He gasped sadly as he heard her whimper the first time, watching her grip onto some sort of stuffed animal. The moonlight glimmered off of the sudden tears that rolled down her cheeks; she was sobbing softly in her sleep.

It pained Adrien to see Marinette like this and made him wonder... Did this happen every night? Maybe—

Unfortunately, his thought process was disturbed as he heard Marinette bolt awake in bed, her breathing heavy as she looked around her room. He saw Tikki wake up on the desk where she normally slept and flew up to Marinette, quietly cooing words of comfort to the young lady.

Adrien frowned, jumping to her balcony and knocking on her trapdoor, patiently waiting for her to open it.

Marinette opened the trapdoor a couple minutes later and Adrien took note of her attempts to cover up her tears. Though he did notice her tear-stained cheeks, red, puffy under eyes and bluebell eyes clouded with sorrow and fear. "Hey, Adrien. What brings you here this late? Was there an Akuma I didn't know about?" She greeted, putting on a fake smile.

"M'lady...what's wrong?" Adrien asked, seeing right through her fake, bubbly persona.

Marinette's face fell when he asked what was wrong, her eyes watering with tears that were threatening to spill. "Adrien..." she looked down at her feet.

Adrien quickly jumped down into her room, pulling her into his arms and sitting down on her bed with her in his lap. He released his transformation and turned her head so that he could press his forehead against hers. "What's wrong, Princess? Why are you crying?"

"I—It's nothing, kitten..." she sobbed.

"Bugaboo, don't lie to me."

"Alright, alright. Fine; you got me.." she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "It's just a nightmare..."

" 'Just a nightmare'?! How often do you have nightmares like this?"

Marinette looked down at her lap. "Every night..." she admitted quietly. "Ever since the first few Akuma attacks..."

Adrien's eyes widened when she told him this. Every night? Since the first few Akuma attacks? How has she managed to keep this hidden? "Why didn't you tell me about them?"

"Because I didn't want you worrying..."

"Oh Princess...worrying about you isn't going to kill me. You should have told me sooner.."

"I thought about telling you sooner...but then the reveal happened and I didn't want to put so much information onto your shoulders."

"M'lady, knowing this wasn't going to kill me," He reassured. "Now...I don't know if you want to tell me this, but...what are the nightmares about?"

Marinette gulped before sighing. "Well...they go a little something like this..."

—————

Marinette spent the past hour or so explaining her nightmares to her partner in fighting crime. Explaining how they always have an Akuma that they have fought in the past, or how she has to be forced to watch an akumatized version of herself fight him.

Hearing this made Adrien sad, and he swore to himself that he would always try to make Marinette feel better after having a nightmare.

"You know...you can always call me after you wake up from one of your nightmares, just so we can talk." Adrien pointed out.

"But...I don't wanna wake you!" Marinette whined slightly.

"I don't care if you wake me up, I just always want to make sure you're happy and okay. Even if that means just you needing to hear my voice."

"Adrien—"

He cut her off. "Nu-uh, Marinette. You will call me after you have a nightmare, okay?"

Marinette gave in and sighed. "Alright, kitty."

"Good. Now since tomorrow is not a school day, I'm just going to stay and cuddle with you." Adrien smiled, wrapping his arms around her tighter.

Marinette giggled a bit. "Okay kitten, if you want to."

Adrien pulled her back onto the bed, laying on his side with Marinette beside him. He pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, letting her nuzzle her head in just under his.

"Goodnight, Bugaboo."

"Goodnight, Chaton."
