"Mariiiiiiiiiii!"
"Yes, Chaton?"
"How long before you're home?"
"You asked me this yesterday.."
"But Princess..."
"I told you I'm coming home in about two weeks."
Adrien sighed. "I know..."
"Shhhh, kitten. We'll talk later. I know timezones and I know it's around midnight there; go to sleep. I—yes, yes I'll be right there—sorry kitten, I have to go anyway. Talk to you later Chaton."
Adrien said his goodbye and the phone call ended with a quiet beep. He sighed, placing his phone on his nightstand before laying back in bed, staring at the blank ceiling. Marinette was right, it was around midnight; a little bit past midnight to be exact.
Marinette and a few other designers from the Gabriel fashion company were sent off to China to gather intel and inspiration due to the fact that they had wanted to make a Chinese-based line, and wanted to be culturally correct. Marinette, being half Chinese, was chosen to be the head of this mission, and it would be easier since she had family in China anyway; she already had knowledge of Chinese culture and China itself so she could help be a guide for the other designers that went with her.
Marinette was also secretly looking for information on the miraculous.
She had made that mission clear to herself and Adrien when Gabriel had made the decision to send her and some designers to China. And when she had gone to Master Fu to tell him that she wasn't going to be in Paris for a while, he had told her to try to find stuff on the miraculous.
"I already decided on doing that!" Adrien remembered Marinette chuckling.
Adrien managed to smile faintly as he thought about that memory. Though it made him abruptly sit up in bed. He hadn't realized it fully before, but now he was realizing that he missed Marinette more than he thought while they were apart.
He cursed quietly under his breath, how had he not noticed this before?!
Adrien eventually sighed, curling up under the covers and falling asleep.
—————
Marinette wrote down notes as the speaker for this meeting she had to attend continued to speak, talking about Chinese culture and the clothing style. There were times when the speaker changed to Chinese on accident and Marinette would translate what they were saying to English until the speaker realized that they were speaking Chinese and change back to English again, apologizing profusely.
When the meeting ending, Marinette and the other designers had the chance to explore China. Marinette, being a secret mission, went to 'explore China', looking around for information on the miraculous.
As she walked around, and with Tikki's help, she eventually came across a building in ruins. There was no information about what this building originally was for or who used it, but the description of the rubble look very familiar to how Master Fu described the rubble of the ruined building of the miraculous guardians.
Tikki poked her head out of Marinette's bag. "Yep. That's it. The building of the miraculous guardians. In ruins..."
Marinette gently patted the small Kwami's head for comfort before spotting something peculiar. She carefully made her way over to it and moved a piece of rubble to see what it was.
It was a bookcase. Fallen over and a little bit was destroyed. In the corner of her eye, Marinette spotted two books. When she walked over to them, she realizes they weren't damaged too much; no pages were ripped out according to a quick flip through both books and the spines weren't too bad, but had pages from what seemed to be other books inside. The writing in the books looked extremely similar to the writing Marinette had given back to Master Fu a few years before and some even had hand-drawn pictures of the miraculous and Kwamis in them.
