Grace’s POV
“Oh, there’s Grace! Well, I’m going to head into the kitchen to finish up dinner,” Mom looked up at me, smiling nervously and heading back into the kitchen.
I reached the bottom step before the end of my high heel dug into the wood, catching the side and sending me plummeting towards the ground until a pair of arms wrapped around me and caught me inches before I hit the floor.
“Hi,” Ian said as he looked into my eyes, still bent over with me in his arms.
“Hi,” I giggled. Why the heck was I giggling? This kid was a total jerk.
Ian lifted me up so my feet were on the floor and let go of my back so I could stand up straight. I wasn't surprised at his strength, but he was so gentle too...
“Um, thanks. Sorry these shoes are kind of hard to walk in,” I blushed in embarrassment. I eyed Ian, and I had to say, he looked hot. He was wearing his usual black skinny jeans, this time without rips, and a navy blue dress shirt. He was still wearing his black high tops, but they matched his outfit perfectly. It made him look a bit more like the Ian I knew.
“It’s okay, I’m used to girls falling all over me,” Ian said in a hushed tone with a smirk, but his eyes didn’t seem to match the confidence in his voice. I rolled my eyes and started to walk towards the kitchen.
“Follow me,” I said, not bothering to turn around because I knew Ian was right behind me, probably wishing I would fall again.
We walked into the kitchen to see Mom still at the stove and Daddy grabbing drinking glasses from the cabinet. They were talking in hushed voices but immediately stopped when we appeared in their vision.
“Hello again Ian,” my dad said while holding a hand out for Ian to shake.
“Nice to see you again ,sir,” the Ian said and shaking my dad's hand.
Dad looked a little taken back by his manners, still judging him by his appearance first, as everyone else did.
“Dinner’s ready!” Mom called out rather loudly, breaking the awkward silence.
John and Noel hurried downstairs to join the rest of us. I could hear their footsteps tumbling down the stairs, meaning that they were racing as usual.
“I GOT HERE FIRST!” Noel screamed at John as he came sprinting a millisecond after.
“NO I DID” John screamed back as he almost ran into Ian.
“Welcome to my family,” I murmured, earning a chuckle from Ian.
“Knock it off John and Noel! You're acting like five year olds!” Daddy scolded my insane siblings.
“I’m the mature one here,” I pointed out to Ian as we sat down at the table.
“Shut up, Grace,” John glared at me teasingly, John was really protective of me but never liked to admit it. He mostly showed his love in condescending comments.
“You’re Ian, right?” John questioned Ian.
“Yeah, you’re on the football team right? Wide receiver on varsity?” Ian raised an eyebrow. John beamed.
“Yeah, man,” my brother said while trying to be cool, but secretly excited that someone recognized him as a varsity player. Reputation was everything with my brother.
I just rolled my eyes for what felt like the millionth time today.
I looked around the table to see that Daddy was at the head of the table to my left, Noel was next to me, and Mom was at the other head of the table, directly on my right. John was in front of me and Ian was diagonal to me and next to Daddy, which can't be good.
